The "2nd Peach Blossom Fair," which opened on January 13th in Trieu Son district ( Thanh Hoa province), not only contributes to the vibrant colors of spring but also serves as an opportunity to promote the image of the land, people, and cultural beauty of the region.

This is the second time Mr. Nguyen Dai Dao, a garden owner in Hamlet 4 (Van Son Commune, Trieu Son District), has been invited to participate in the peach blossom fair. He is a long-time peach blossom grower, producing high-quality products to serve the Tet flower-loving hobby of the people. This year, Mr. Dao selected more than 10 of the most beautiful peach blossom trees from his garden to showcase. For him, this is not just a hobby for experienced flower growers, but also an opportunity to introduce and promote to friends and colleagues the unique products created by him and the local people.

Mr. Dao said that Hamlet 4 (Van Son Commune) is a semi-mountainous, purely agricultural area, but the area of land for rice cultivation is very small and the yield is low. People work tirelessly year-round, yet remain poor. Then, peach trees came to him and everyone in the hamlet like a destined encounter. The soil and climate are suitable; the trees thrive even without much care. After only two years, they begin to produce vibrant blossoms. Initially, he only planted five or seven trees to have flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year) and to give to friends, but later many people came to buy them to decorate their homes for the spring festival… And so, peach orchards gradually formed and expanded.

Recognizing this as an opportunity to "change his life," in 2012, Mr. Dao boldly converted his entire 1.5 acres of unproductive orchards and rice paddies into peach orchards. In addition, he learned and applied scientific and technical methods to cultivation, producing new peach varieties with more vibrant and long-lasting flowers. "Currently, my family plants over 700 peach trees each year. After deducting all costs for seedlings and fertilizers, each peach harvest brings in an income of 300-400 million VND, which is many times more profitable than rice farming or livestock raising, and especially with very little risk," Mr. Dao said.

Mr. Le Ba Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Van Son commune, also stated: Since 2010, the Van Son commune government has encouraged people to renovate their unproductive gardens and plant peach blossom trees. The commune has planned 10 hectares of low-yield rice land and encouraged people to convert it to growing ornamental peach blossoms. To date, the entire commune has over 60 hectares of peach blossom trees, yielding a value of 500-600 million VND per hectare. "Thanks to peach blossom trees, many households have been able to acquire modern machinery for cultivation, build large houses, and buy cars... It can be said that peach blossom trees are becoming the main crop for the people of Van Son to develop their economy and get rich on their own land," Mr. Thanh affirmed.

Speaking with a reporter from Dai Doan Ket Newspaper, Mr. Le Van Tuan, Secretary of the Trieu Son District Party Committee, said that given the potential and strengths of developing ornamental plant cultivation, the district has developed a plan to support people in boldly converting hilly and low-yield rice land into peach and ornamental plant cultivation. In addition, the district also has policies to stimulate demand such as: providing scientific support, technology transfer, funding, land consolidation, and bank loans to encourage people to expand their cultivated area, as well as expanding service provision and renting out plants during and after the Tet holiday.
