At the press conference for the 2026 high school graduation exam this afternoon, June 12th, a suggestion was made for the Ministry of Education and Training to assess whether the literature exam questions were appropriate for students in different regions.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Quality Management Department (Ministry of Education and Training), affirmed that exam question preparation is always one of the key tasks. One of the directives from the Ministry of Education and Training leadership is to ensure the "5 correct" criteria.

One of the "5 Rights" is to ensure regional fairness across all subjects, thereby guaranteeing the highest possible level of equity.
Specifically, regarding the literature subject, Mr. Ha stated that the feedback received by the Ministry of Education and Training relates to the questions and the content of the social commentary essay.
"Actually, these issues were discussed and raised during the exam drafting process. This content is included in the section for differentiating students. One difference compared to last year is that the social commentary section, which accounted for 4 points last year, is only worth 2 points this year because it's a differentiating section with new elements," Mr. Ha said.
The second difference, according to Mr. Ha, is that the social commentary section assesses students' understanding and reasoning abilities.
Thirdly, although this is a differentiated section, the questions are still very clear and comprehensive, incorporating both the students' understanding and the information provided in the reading comprehension material from the previous section.
"In the exam, when carefully reading the question, we're not talking about detailed information that can be memorized mechanically, such as their biographies or inventions. Here, the image of 'Steve Jobs Vietnam' placed in quotation marks is a literary metaphor and a content item for testing and scoring," Mr. Ha said, affirming that every word and phrase had been carefully selected, with expert opinions sought and dictionaries consulted to distinguish between "invention," "innovation," and "creativity."
Mr. Ha also noted that literature is both a scientific and an artistic subject. From a literary perspective, it involves understanding and analysis. For the new curriculum, in addition to some prescribed works, this year's essay topics include works by Nguyen Dinh Thi and social commentary essays to convey messages about innovation and breakthroughs in science and technology for the country today.
Major changes in grading for literature exams.
Regarding the grading of essay exams, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha said that the Ministry of Education and Training had met with 34 directors of provincial Departments of Education and Training to emphasize how to improve the objectivity of the grading process.
"A major innovation in this year's literature exam is that for the first time, we will be grading using rubrics. This is a method that the Ministry of Education and Training has implemented nationwide teacher training on. The application of rubrics is a way to ensure fairness in grading and reduce subjectivity," Mr. Ha said.
In language arts assessment, a rubric is a detailed scoring criteria table. It serves as a standardized measure to help teachers grade objectively, while also helping students understand the requirements they need to meet to improve their writing or speaking skills.
Previously, Associate Professor Bui Manh Hung, Principal Coordinator of the 2018 General Education Curriculum Development Board, also suggested the need to develop a rubric to serve as a basis for open-ended answers in the Literature subject. Teachers need to be thoroughly trained before participating in grading exams, and model grading sessions based on criteria should be organized to minimize discrepancies between provinces and cities, and between examiners.
