The new wave of Vietnamese fashion

A new wave of Vietnamese fashion is emerging from designers born in the 1990s. Not only are they making a name for themselves in the international market, but these young fashion designers are also expressing their long-term vision through new business models, creative communities, and independent, internationally-standardized fashion shows.

Following in the footsteps of the older generation who made their mark on the world of Vietnamese high fashion , recently a new generation of young designers has also seen their names constantly mentioned by international media, such as Duy Tran, Lam Gia Khang, Cuong Dam, Phan Dang Hoang, Phan Huy, Tran Hung, Diep Yen, Trong Lam, Tra Linh, Linh Nga…

Towards the international market

Unlike the long-term strategies of previous generations, 9X designers are determined to approach the international market early on or conquer international fashion enthusiasts before taking systematic steps in the domestic market. They utilize the "buzz" of celebrities in various media channels, from Hollywood icons and Cannes red carpet artists to K-pop stars and global youth idols…

Tran Hung (27 years old) is the first Vietnamese designer to become a full member of the British Fashion Council in 2020. Choosing the path of sustainable fashion, he built his reputation by maintaining a schedule of shows at London Fashion Week (UK) and constantly researching and experimenting to create new environmentally friendly materials such as vegan leather. Designer Diep Yen and the Montsand brand made an impressive appearance at London Fashion Week in September 2024, shortly after Taylor Swift, Amanda Holden, Karoline Podolak, and others became customers of the brand.

Young Vietnamese designers are increasingly showcasing their new designs at major fashion events. Notable examples include Phan Đăng Hoàng at Milan Fashion Week (Italy), Phan Huy and Phạm Ngọc Anh at Paris Fashion Week (France); and brands like Hacchic Couture, Lsoul, Sixdo, and Linh Nga Couture at Shanghai Fashion Week (China)...

Besides officially appearing at international fashion weeks, more and more Vietnamese brands are participating in pop-up stores abroad to offer customers a hands-on experience. This is a good supplementary distribution and marketing channel to e-commerce, exploited by designers Tran Khanh Duy, Lam Gia Khang, and Vietnamese brands such as CaoStu, An Heritage, Jump Out, Paradise Saigon, Thome, Afterparty, Lider, The Idiot, Aka Mydinh, Dalya studios, Duc Studio, Laminapparel, etc.

New generation fashion show

Recently, there were three impressive and distinctive fashion shows representing the new generation of Vietnamese fashion: Renaked , Orbit , and DEPA Fashion Show .

Renaked (held on June 10th) was the debut show of Fancì Club, a brand founded in 2018 by designer Tran Khanh Duy. Renaked is considered to be close to the spirit of international runways, offering audiences a unique experience in terms of space, setting, and fashion language through its massive collection of over 80 designs. Before gaining attention from domestic media, Fancì Club had already appeared in many major publications such as The New York Times, Business Insider, Grazia, Vogue UK, Elle Australia … After opening a store in Ho Chi Minh City and showcasing designs in a pop-up store held in New York (USA) at the end of May, this show is a strategic step in the journey of building a systematic and professional brand for the designer born in 1999.

Following Renaked was the Orbit Runway Show (held on June 14th), organized by Rue Miche, bringing together over 20 local fashion and accessory brands such as Stress Mama, Beuter, Rakkiu, Aah Midnight Club, Accox Acx, Afterparty, Dalya, Mare, Latui Atelier, Victim of the Prime, Maverik, Gian Saigon, Kimtr, Subtle Le Nguyen, Forty Three, Back to Astroworld, Jellyfish, and Waa. Unlike typical shows with separate catwalks, models walked among the audience, showcasing diverse collections. Each design was a statement of individuality, a story about materials, techniques, and brand spirit, seamlessly connecting on the runway and reflecting the youthful, diverse, and rich identity of Vietnamese fashion.

Meanwhile, the DEPA Fashion Show (June 20th) marked the launch of the Vietnam Designer Emerging Partnership Association (DEPA). The five founding young designers, including Quách Đắc Thắng (La Lune), Nguyễn Minh Đức (Duc Studio), Quý Cao (CaoStu), Elena Nguyễn (Elena Ngn), and Huyền Bùi (T-Redx), presented a bold, distinctive, yet uniquely personal fashion portrait through five exceptional collections. With the theme of transforming individuality based on the roots of original creativity, the dialogue through fabrics, identity, and the spirit of daring to create fashion in their own way by these five young people created a significant impact in the Vietnamese fashion community. DEPA aims to build a sustainable foundation for independent designers, operating as an open community to learn together, share resources, connect opportunities, and achieve sustainable development.

"Young designers who want to go far should choose to go together and create their own playground. I hope DEPA will have an annual fashion show; the unity of young people with the same passion and voice will make the Vietnamese fashion industry stronger and attract the attention of the world," said designer Quy Cao.
