On June 16th, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases issued a warning after receiving numerous malaria patients, all of whom had returned from African countries.
The doctors treated the male patient for malaria while they were working in Africa.
A typical example is Mr. HVT (36 years old, from Thanh Hoa province ), who previously worked in Congo. According to the patient, during his time working there, especially during the rainy season, he suffered from malaria multiple times. Each time he had a fever, he only received treatment to reduce the fever with intravenous fluids before continuing to work.
Concerned about his deteriorating health, Mr. T decided to return to Vietnam for treatment. However, about two weeks after returning home, he experienced a recurrence of high fever (nearly 40°C), chills, headache, nausea, dizziness, and persistent fatigue. Recognizing the similar symptoms to previous malaria attacks, his family took him to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Also receiving treatment here is Mr. MTH (45 years old, from Tuyen Quang ), a former migrant worker in Angola. While working abroad, he contracted malaria but did not receive complete treatment. Two months after returning to Vietnam, he experienced another fever and self-medicated with the remaining medicine he had brought from Angola for several days until the symptoms subsided.
A week before hospitalization, Mr. H suddenly developed a high fever of 40.2°C, accompanied by severe chills that persisted despite multiple blankets. Each fever episode lasted approximately three hours and occurred twice a day. At a local medical facility, tests confirmed he was positive for the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. He was immediately transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for specialized treatment.
According to Dr. Tran Duy Hung, Head of the Virology - Parasitology Department, both patients were admitted with high fever, chills, headache, and general body aches, and had a history of living and working in African countries. Blood test results showed infection with Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria parasite.
"This is the most common parasite causing malaria and is also the cause of many severe cases. If not treated promptly, patients may face the risk of severe illness, multi-organ failure, and death," Dr. Hung emphasized.
Following intensive treatment with specific antimalarial drugs via injection and oral administration, both patients responded well. Their fever was controlled, laboratory indicators improved significantly, their health stabilized, and they are continuing to be monitored.
Vietnam encourages US businesses to expand investment in high technology. On the morning of June 26th, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung received Mr. Jeff Place, Supply Chain Director of Coherent Group (USA). During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam encourages US businesses to expand investment, especially in high-tech, innovation, and semiconductor industries.
According to Dr. Hung, people who develop acute fever symptoms after returning from abroad, especially from African countries, should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for examination and early testing. Timely diagnosis is crucial for treatment and reducing the risk of severe complications. For those preparing to travel to malaria-endemic areas, it is necessary to proactively learn about epidemiological risks, implement measures to prevent mosquito bites, and seek medical advice on the use of preventive medication when needed to minimize the risk of contracting the disease.
