The military said hundreds of people may be trapped under mud, soil, and rubble.
On July 30, Indian media reported that at least 41 people were killed and more than 70 injured in landslides in the mountainous region of Kerala, in the southern part of the country. Heavy rains and the collapse of a major bridge are hindering rescue efforts. The Indian Express reported that many people may have been swept away by floodwaters in the Chaliyar River.
The landslide started around midnight, when people were asleep.
Authorities have deployed soldiers to build a temporary bridge after a bridge in Wayanad district collapsed, hindering rescue efforts. More than 200 soldiers have also been sent to the area to support local forces involved in search and rescue operations.
In a statement, the military said hundreds of people may be trapped under mud, soil, and rubble. At least three landslides have occurred in Wayanad district.
Kerala state officials have stated, "The situation is very serious." Authorities have deployed two helicopters to assist in the rescue effort. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has affirmed that all necessary assistance will be provided to Kerala.
