Hundreds of people may be trapped under mud, earth and rubble, the military said.
On July 30, Indian media reported that at least 41 people were killed and more than 70 injured in landslides in the mountainous areas of Kerala state, southern India. Due to heavy rains and the collapse of the main bridge, rescue work is facing many difficulties. Indian Express news agency said that many people may have been swept away by floodwaters on the Chaliyar River.
The landslides started around midnight, when people were sleeping.
Authorities have deployed soldiers to build temporary bridges after a bridge collapsed in Wayanad district, hampering rescue efforts. More than 200 soldiers have also been deployed to the area to support local forces involved in search and rescue operations.
Hundreds of people may be trapped under mud, earth and debris, the army said in a statement. At least three landslides occurred in Wayanad district.
Kerala state officials said: "The situation is very serious." Authorities have deployed two helicopters to help in the rescue. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would provide all necessary assistance to Kerala.
