Hundreds of people may be trapped under mud, dirt and rubble, the military said.
On July 30, Indian media reported that at least 7 people were killed and more than 41 injured in landslides that occurred in the mountainous area of Kerala state, southern country. Due to heavy rain and the main bridge collapsing, rescue work is facing many difficulties. Indian Express news agency said that many people may have been swept away by floodwaters on the Chaliyar River.
Landslides started happening around midnight, when people were sleeping.
Authorities mobilized soldiers to build a temporary bridge after a bridge in Wayanad district collapsed, hindering rescue work. More than 200 soldiers were also dispatched to the area to support local forces participating in search and rescue.
In a statement, the army said hundreds of people could be trapped under mud, dirt and rubble. At least three landslides have occurred in Wayanad district.
Kerala state officials affirmed: "The situation is very serious." Authorities dispatched two helicopters to participate in the rescue. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed that he will provide all necessary support to Kerala state.
