Amidst the vast ocean, Ly Son Island emerges as a "green gem" of Central Vietnam, both tranquil and vibrant.

With an area of just over 10 km² and nearly 25,000 inhabitants, the Ly Son Special Economic Zone is gradually asserting its position as a center for marine economy , tourism, and services. Here, garlic – the island's "white gold" – is grown on an area of 290 hectares, yielding approximately 1,000 tons per year.
On the white sandy fields, the people still diligently cultivate each row of garlic and onion, imbuing them with faith, determination, and love for their homeland. Ly Son garlic is not only a specialty but also a symbol of overcoming difficulties, a product that embodies the essence of the land, wind, and the salty taste of the sea.
Along with agriculture , tourism is becoming a bright spot in the island's development journey. In the past nine months, Ly Son has welcomed more than 82,000 visitors, including over 1,000 international tourists - a record number since becoming a special economic zone.
Famous landmarks such as To Vo Gate, Cau Cave, Hang Pagoda, Thoi Loi Peak... attract tourists not only because of their pristine beauty but also because of the cultural and historical depth of this land, which is closely associated with the once steadfast Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands fleet.

Mr. Nguyen Van Huy, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ly Son Special Economic Zone, said: "We are focusing on developing tourism in conjunction with preserving the culture of the islands and seas, while also building brands for clean agricultural products such as garlic, onions, and dried seafood. The goal is sustainable development, so that people can both engage in economic activities and protect the environment and preserve the sovereignty of the islands and seas."
As part of a survey trip to the nearshore islands, members of the delegation visited and exchanged experiences with the authorities and people of Ly Son, thereby learning about the model of economic development linked to community tourism.
In the garlic production areas, the delegation noted the creativity of the people in applying new techniques, both increasing productivity and protecting the marine environment.
Mr. Duong Hiep Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhon Chau commune (Gia Lai province), shared: “After visiting and learning about the production model of the people here, we realize that the direction of developing clean agriculture is very worthwhile to learn from. Cu Lao Xanh Island has similarities in natural conditions with Ly Son. We will absorb the experience and apply it to production and tourism development in the locality.”
Working on Ly Son Island takes place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Each story, each example of resilient fishermen venturing out to sea, vividly portrays the image of people living in this harsh environment.
Despite the harsh weather and strong monsoon winds, the people of Ly Son, with their willpower and determination, continue to venture out to sea every day, enriching themselves from the ocean and upholding the traditions of their ancestors.
Each ship sailing out to sea carries not only the hope of a bountiful fishing season, but also serves as a "living landmark" affirming the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland in the East Sea.

Fisherman Bui Van Cuu (Tay village, Ly Son special zone) shared: “Thanks to the Coast Guard's awareness campaigns against IUU fishing, the people have a better understanding of the sea and legal fishing grounds. Every time we go out to sea, everyone reminds each other to abide by the law, both to preserve our livelihood and to protect the sea for future generations.”
Legal awareness campaigns on the island have now become a familiar activity, helping people to have more confidence and cooperate with authorities in protecting sovereignty and developing the marine economy.
Thanks to the attention of the Party, the State, and the armed forces, Ly Son is transforming. Infrastructure such as transportation, electricity, water, and schools are being developed comprehensively, and the lives of the people are improving.
On the island, concrete roads stretch along the coast, and new, spacious houses spring up amidst the fishing villages. The lively laughter and chatter at the fish market every morning are testaments to the new vitality of this frontier island.
The Ly Son Special Economic Zone has been developing strongly. The Party Committee, the government, and the people here continue to strive to write the enduring story of "protecting the sea and building the homeland," so that this sacred land will forever be worthy of being the homeland of the heroic Hoang Sa troops, who made a golden chapter in history in the journey of protecting the sacred sovereignty of the nation's sea and islands.
