Since Carrick took over the team, Mainoo has started four consecutive Premier League matches. He contributed two assists, in the 3-2 win against Arsenal and the 2-0 win against Tottenham. This is Mainoo's longest start streak of the 2025/26 season.
Previously, Mainoo struggled to get playing time as Ruben Amorim prioritized Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in central midfield. After Amorim was sacked, Carrick restored Mainoo's trust, helping him quickly regain his important role.
Commenting on the podcast The Rest Is Football , Gary Lineker offered candid, even humorous, remarks about the difficult period Mainoo went through previously. He suggested that the limited playing opportunities under Ruben Amorim were difficult to explain.
"I was just joking, but Mainoo should really be thinking about whether he should 'sue' Amorim. A year of his career has been taken away," Lineker said.
Gary Lineker believes Mainoo is showing why he was once so highly rated. "He receives the ball, turns, and almost always makes the right decision. It all looks so simple," Lineker said. He also admitted feeling "puzzled" by Mainoo's previously limited playing opportunities.
According to Lineker, Mainoo's return to regular playing time is crucial for his development, especially as England are looking for quality young players. He believes that if he maintains his form and fitness, Mainoo could compete for a place in upcoming major tournaments such as the 2026 World Cup.
This season, Mainoo has played 18 games in all competitions and provided three assists. Although he hasn't scored a goal yet, his consistency and influence on the game have made him one of Manchester United's bright spots recently, and he also demonstrates the positive impact of the changes on the coaching staff.
