Man United pays the price for Amorim.

More than half the summer has passed, but Manchester United's restructuring plan is still nowhere near completion. They haven't even managed to sell any players.

Manchester United's dire financial situation is all too clear, after three consecutive years of wasteful spending under manager Erik Ten Hag. The result has been a downward spiral in the Premier League and a deadlock in European competitions. Man United may not even qualify for any European competitions next season.

This resulted in a loss of at least €100 million in revenue (including bonuses, business deals, and ticket sales) compared to the previous season – when they qualified for the Europa League. And a loss of over €200 million in revenue compared to the season before that, when Man United still qualified for the Champions League.

Manager Ruben Amorim wasn't to blame for Manchester United's systemic decline. But now he is, because all of Manchester United's plans for the past two months have been in disarray as they haven't been able to resolve the sales issue.

At the end of the 2024-2025 season, the English media reported that Manchester United had compiled a list of players who would leave the team this summer. This list included up to 10 names. After two months, they had only finalized the departures of three: Jonny Evans retiring, and Eriksen and Lindelof whose contracts had expired. These were entirely natural departures. It doesn't demonstrate any effectiveness of the transfer team at Old Trafford.

So who hasn't left as planned? First, there's captain Bruno Fernandes – who decided to stay at Man United instead of going to Al Hilal to "retire". This was a rather courageous decision by the Portuguese midfielder, welcomed by most Red Devils fans. But the rest are different. Man United have publicly put Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho, Antony, and Malacia up for sale. Onana and Casemiro are on the "waiting to be considered" list.

In the case of the star quartet of Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho, and Antony, they represent the future of the team as they still have very high market value (around 30-50 million euros each). Manchester United expects to earn 150-200 million euros from selling these four stars. However, to date, they have yet to sell any of them.

Why? Because of Amorim's arrogance. Coach Amorim made a huge mistake by publicly ending the futures of the four players mentioned above. He even used harsh words, such as declaring, "You should pray you find a new club," to Garnacho.

As a result, after two months, Man United still haven't managed to sell these four players, or more precisely, sell them for the price they want. The whole world knows Man United wants to get rid of them. Therefore, it's inevitable that they are being pressured into accepting lower prices in the transfer market.

Managing football is a complex job. And Amorim's immaturity in his handling of the situation is costing Man United dearly.
