Kylian Mbappe rose to the absolute second spot on the list of all-time top scorers at the FIFA World Cup as France beat Sweden 3-0 at the New York Stadium in New Jersey to secure their place in the round of 16 on the morning of July 1st.
Mbappe scored a brace, bringing his World Cup goal tally to 18, now two goals ahead of Miroslav Klose and just one goal behind Lionel Messi – and there will certainly be a change in the top two in the coming days. Bradley Barcola also scored, helping Les Bleus continue their perfect start at the 2026 World Cup.
France put on a spectacular attacking display in the first half. The 1998 and 2018 World Cup champions unleashed 15 shots on goal before halftime, including one by Mbappe that was disallowed for offside and another that hit the post. Michael Olise also came close to scoring, his spectacular bicycle kick finding the back of the net.
Their relentless pressure finally paid off just before the end of the first half. Receiving a short corner kick on the left wing, Mbappe skillfully penetrated the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot that went straight into the far corner of the net.

After the half-time break, France continued to press the Swedish goal. Mbappe completed his brace in the 74th minute after another superb assist from Olise. The French number 10 had now scored his sixth goal at the 2026 World Cup.
The French captain will have a chance to increase his goal tally when France faces Paraguay in the round of 16 at the Philadelphia Stadium on July 4th.

Also on the morning of July 1st, Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1, while co-hosts Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0, continuing their unbeaten run in their fourth match at the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico is currently awaiting their opponent, the winner of the match between England and Congo, which takes place at 11 PM tonight (July 1st, Vietnam time).
