Expanding the application of 5G technology.

According to experts, if 4G technology ushered in the "internet era," then 5G is expected to be the driving force behind the strong and in-depth development of the digital economy. However, commercializing 5G is not an easy task, due to high investment costs, a long payback period, and the readiness of the entire society.

In Vietnam, 5G technology infrastructure has begun to be widely deployed by domestic network operators, creating a foundation for a boom in applications in the near future. In the overall socio -economic landscape, 5G will bring many benefits to the country, businesses, and people.

Infrastructure comes first.

Starting in August 2025, Viettel Post Corporation will organize dozens of livestream sessions in four provinces: Thai Nguyen, Vinh Long, Bac Ninh , and Lai Chau, to support people in mountainous areas in selling their agricultural products. After just three livestream sessions in Sin Ho commune (Lai Chau), the H'Mong people there sold over 300 tons of ginseng potatoes.

Viettel Post Deputy General Director Dinh Thanh Son shared: "For farmers, especially in mountainous areas, the story of bumper harvests leading to low prices, or high prices coinciding with poor harvests, is a common occurrence. Now, through 5G network applications and logistics systems, 'Viettel Post has brought the whole world of buyers' directly to ethnic minority communities. Thanks to 5G, farmers can 'bring the market to their hands,' standing amidst tea hills, terraced rice fields, or their own gardens to livestream sales, introducing each bundle of vegetables, potatoes, and cassava to consumers everywhere."

Moreover, this technology is also transforming agricultural production as IoT (Internet of Things) devices using 5G to measure temperature, humidity, weather, etc., are beginning to be widely tested.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, by 2025, 5G will be widely commercialized with coverage reaching over 90% of the population, promoting smart manufacturing. Viettel alone has deployed an additional 23,500 base stations, exceeding its commitment to the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Government (20,000 stations), bringing the total number of 5G base stations to 30,000, achieving 90% outdoor coverage and 70% indoor coverage.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Lam, a senior telecommunications solutions expert at Huawei Vietnam, assessed: In Vietnam, 5G networks are developing very rapidly, and many applications have been strongly deployed in e-commerce. However, "deeper" applications such as smart cities or smart factories still need time to boom because they require the participation of businesses and guidance from the State. Therefore, the Government needs to issue mechanisms and policies to encourage and promote the application of 5G; the media also needs to strengthen propaganda and provide information about the benefits of 5G and its impact on businesses so that they enthusiastically embrace it.

Creating a foundation for application development.

Responding to the question of why Viettel is determined to widely deploy 5G despite the high investment costs, Ms. Nguyen Ha Thanh, Deputy General Director of Viettel Telecom, said: The corporation always considers investing in 5G as building a national strategic digital infrastructure in line with Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW. Evaluating the effectiveness of 5G investment needs to be viewed broadly at the national level, from developing the economy based on increased efficiency in government operations at all levels, improving people's living standards through technology applications, to businesses developing new business models…

Meanwhile, 5G has also yielded initial business results, with Viettel's 5G subscribers accounting for 50% of all new subscribers; data usage increasing by 15-20%; and customer satisfaction surveys for mobile services increasing by 20% compared to before.

On the other hand, once the infrastructure is ready, applications will also be deployed very quickly. Soon, Viettel Telecom will announce three virtual assistant platforms for individuals, families, and businesses, efficiently utilizing the invested 5G infrastructure.

Concurring with this view, Nguyen Tuan Huy, Deputy Head of Technology at MobiFone, shared: The recent application of AI cameras in Hanoi has significantly changed people's awareness of traffic participation, while simultaneously addressing traffic congestion and bringing clear socio-economic benefits. MobiFone is continuing to participate in the Smart City project for Hanoi to address five major bottlenecks: "urban order, traffic congestion, localized flooding, environmental pollution, and food safety and hygiene."

Some of the 5G applications currently being tested include: rescue centers using drones to fly directly to fire sites, identifying whether it's a chemical fire or a regular fire to automatically dispatch fire trucks and ambulances using AI; camera systems used for various purposes such as monitoring flooding and crime; and monitoring encroachment on sidewalks and roads.

In the coming period, Hanoi will continue to develop many large-scale new urban areas, allowing for the implementation of smart cities based on the Smart City 3.0 model, which relies on real-time data and automation models.

It is clear that from 2026 onwards, if the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW is properly implemented, the application of 5G will truly explode.

Regarding the shared use of 5G infrastructure, Deputy Director of Telecommunications (Ministry of Science and Technology) Nguyen Anh Cuong stated: The Ministry's policy in recent times has been to allow businesses to compete freely in areas with competitive potential, while in areas needing development but with reduced competition, shared use will be promoted. For example, in remote and rural areas, we will allocate areas for businesses to invest in and then require shared roaming. The policy on shared infrastructure use needs to be flexible, depending on the actual situation of the locality, closely linked to the passive infrastructure development plan in the area; at the same time, ensuring the interests and competitiveness of network operators.
