Despite England being seeded in the top group, many fans remain cautious when discussing Croatia, a team that has repeatedly caused heartbreak for the "Three Lions" in the past. The biggest reason is the presence of Luka Modric, who will turn 40 but is still playing at a very high level.
In the 2025/26 season, the former Real Madrid star will still be the playmaker for AC Milan, the team currently leading Serie A. This consistent performance has caused many English fans to worry about the prospect of him continuing to "torment" their national team as he has done before.
During the Euro 2008 qualifiers, Modric delivered an outstanding performance, helping Croatia defeat England in both legs and preventing the "Three Lions" from reaching the finals.
At the 2018 World Cup, the Croatian midfielder once again became a nightmare for England, playing a major role in helping his team come from behind to win 2-1 in the semi-finals, leaving England's dream of winning the world championship unfulfilled once more.

Modric will turn 41 if he plays in the 2026 World Cup. The midfielder has admitted he has no intention of stopping and will continue to contribute to the national team if given the opportunity.
