Dorgu has yet to inspire confidence in the Manchester United defense. |
Manchester United are showing signs of resurgence after a difficult start to the season. Three points in matchday 9 helped MU climb into the top four. The season is still long, but the "Red Devils" have the right to dream big. However, without upgrades to their defense, especially with Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu, MU can hardly hope to compete for the Premier League title.
The two full-backs are very important.
In a three-centre-back formation, the roles of the two wing-backs are extremely important. Sadly, this is the weakest link in Manchester United's current defense.
Against Brighton on the morning of October 26th, Dalot was deployed as a wing-back in Amorim's 3-4-3 system. Although MU won, the Portuguese defender did not play particularly impressively. He was among the players with the lowest ratings in the team (6.7 points).
It's a sad reality. Dalot joined Manchester United from Porto in 2018 with the expectation of becoming a top right-back. At the age of 26, Dalot has made over 150 appearances for the "Red Devils," but his performances have often only been average.
Dalot possesses speed and a good fighting spirit. However, his overlapping runs, crosses, and link-up play in the final third rarely prove effective, especially when playing in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation that prioritizes the wing-back role. In other words, Dalot is not good at playing wing-back, a very specific position in a three-centre-back system.
Dalot's biggest weakness lies in his defensive ability and workload. In big matches, Dalot is frequently exploited by opposing wingers who are fast and skillful.
Dalot's lax man-marking, inaccurate positioning, and indecisive handling of situations made him a "weak point" in MU's defense. When playing in a 3-4-3 formation under Amrom, he rarely instilled confidence in the fans.
In the 2025/26 season, statistics show that Dalot averaged only 1.8 successful tackles per game – a very modest number compared to other top full-backs in the league. With a full-back who cannot guarantee solidity at both ends of the pitch, MU will struggle to build a defense strong enough to compete for titles.

Dalot hasn't played well since the start of the season. |
Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu is a new signing for Manchester United, acquired from Lecce during the 2024 winter transfer window. At the age of 20, Dorgu was initially highly regarded for his speed, fitness, and versatility on both wings.
However, Dorgu's youth and lack of experience are major obstacles preventing him from becoming a key player for MU. In MU's three consecutive victories recently, Dorgu was on the bench. Coach Amorim prefers to use Amad Diallo in the right wing role rather than Dorgu.
This is a worrying reality for a true wing-back like Dorgu, who can play well on both flanks. Before losing his starting place at MU this season, Dorgu showed enthusiasm but also made numerous defensive mistakes. His indecisive handling of the ball or poor decision-making at crucial moments made him a target for opposing teams.
For example, in the match against Brighton, Dorgu, despite coming on in the second half, was easily beaten by an opposing player who committed a dangerous foul, nearly resulting in a red card at the end of the game. Dorgu also lacked chemistry with his teammates. MU's defense has already lacked stability in recent years, and a young player like Dorgu quickly struggled.
MU needs an upgrade.
Manchester United's problem clearly doesn't lie solely with Dalot or Dorgu, but with the overall defensive system. However, as analyzed, in a three-centre-back formation, the roles of the two wing-backs are extremely important, even decisive, for success or failure.

Dorgu is not a reliable option for MU. |
To compete for the championship, MU needs two wing-backs who are equally adept at both attacking and defending, and who maintain consistency throughout the 38 league matches. Teams like Manchester City and Arsenal possess full-backs who are not only strong defensively but also contribute significantly to the attacking play. Meanwhile, Dalot and Dorgu, despite their potential, have not yet reached this level.
If Manchester United want to return to the top, a defensive overhaul is essential. Dalot or Dorgu could be good backup options, but the team needs a more high-quality defensive pairing capable of competing with the league's biggest names.
With rivals like Manchester City and Arsenal constantly improving their defenses, Manchester United can hardly dream of winning the title unless they address their defensive problems. The Red Devils' dream of winning the championship will remain just a dream unless they make revolutionary changes in the near future.
