At around 3 PM, dark clouds covered Nam Nghiep village, Ngoc Chien commune, Son La province, followed by a hailstorm lasting about 15 minutes. Vu Cuong, who was driving, said the rain wasn't too heavy, but the hailstones were larger than a fingertip.

At the same time, a hailstorm lasting about 10 minutes occurred in Hang Mon 1 and Hang Mon 2 villages, Phieng Khoai commune, Son La province. Hail fell on the plum orchards, causing the fruit to fall. After the storm, the villagers' plum orchards were devastated, with a layer of plums 1-2 cm in diameter scattered on the ground.

The plum orchard lost its fruit after the hailstorm on the afternoon of March 22nd.

At approximately 5:15 PM in Phu Ninh commune, Phu Tho province, a thunderstorm broke out after a gloomy day. Toan, 32 years old, residing in Ma Thuong B area, went out to close his gate when he heard a rattling sound on the corrugated iron roof.

A minute later, hailstones the size of a thumb fell onto the road. "It's been years since I last saw a hailstorm," Toan said.

Fearing the hailstones would shatter their windows, some people quickly moved their cars parked along the roadside into sheltered areas. After a few minutes of hail, the rain intensified, lasting about 30 minutes and causing sapodilla and star apple trees to lose their fruit.

Northern Vietnam is transitioning from spring to summer, and extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, hailstorms, and lightning are common. Last night, hailstorms occurred in some areas of Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang provinces. On March 17th, thunderstorms and hailstorms damaged 24 houses in Lai Chau province.

Hailstorms are caused by a large temperature difference between the lingering cold air mass and the rapidly rising daytime temperatures, which destabilizes the atmosphere and creates conditions for strong thunderstorms to develop.

In a short time, strong winds can intensify, accompanied by hail and tornadoes, causing roofs to be ripped off, trees toppled, and directly affecting daily life and production. The meteorological agency warns people to closely monitor weather developments, limit going outside during thunderstorms, and proactively reinforce houses and vehicles to minimize risks.
