As evening falls, amidst the peaceful countryside, many people are busy preparing their fishing gear. In the drizzling rain of the twilight, Mr. Ha Van Dung, residing in Vinh Binh hamlet, Vinh Tuy commune, hastily puts on his conical hat, raincoat, carries his net, headlamp, and bucket of fish, and paddles his small boat along the canal near his house. Having been involved in hunting rats and catching freshwater fish for many years, he chooses a coconut palm leaf to anchor the net. While casting his net, Mr. Dung shared: "It's been raining continuously for the past few days, and many fish have been carried away by the current. I've been setting my net since this afternoon, and I'm sure there will be some fish when I check it tomorrow morning."

According to Mr. Dũng, the rainy season is the most favorable time for catching freshwater fish. People have many ways to catch fish, such as setting nets, traps, and seines. When the fields are flooded, the fish begin to move around looking for food and breeding, making them easier to catch. Usually, people take advantage of setting nets in the afternoon and check them the next morning. With just one net anchored overnight, they can catch several kilograms of various fish such as tilapia, catfish, and snakehead. "The ideal time to set nets is near evening or right after a rain shower. If there's another heavy rain at night, it's even luckier. When checking the nets, if you see the poles shaking continuously, you know there are a lot of fish caught," Mr. Dũng said.
Every day, Mr. Dũng catches about 4-5 kg of freshwater fish. On days when there are many fish schools, he can catch more than 10 kg, earning 150,000 - 400,000 VND per day, which helps support his family.
While it was still dark outside, Mr. Vo Hoang De, also from Vinh Binh hamlet, prepared his nets and more than a dozen traps to head to the fields. Paddling his boat through the small canals, he found the irrigation ditches in the rice paddies and carefully set his nets and traps in places where fish usually pass through. Mr. De said: "Every year, when it rains, I take advantage of the opportunity to catch fish to improve my family's meals. This season, the snakehead fish are about two or three fingers long, with firm, fragrant, and fatty meat, which can be prepared into many delicious dishes such as braised with pepper, sour soup, or grilled."
Not only does he use his catch for family meals, but Mr. Đệ also shares it with his neighbors. The rest he dries to save for later. In his small kitchen on rainy days, a pot of braised tilapia with pepper, a bowl of sour fish soup with catfish, or a fragrant grilled catfish always brings the rich flavors of the countryside.
The fishing season in the rice paddies not only provides a source of fresh food and additional income for the people but also evokes the beauty of life in harmony with nature in the countryside. Amidst the sound of falling rain and the rhythmic rowing of boats through the canals, the villagers diligently make a living, preserving a familiar profession that has been passed down through generations.
