Reuters reported today, citing sources familiar with the matter, that US and Iranian negotiators have begun talks at the Burgenstock mountain resort in Switzerland, with representatives from the two mediating countries, Pakistan and Qatar, also participating.
Before the negotiations began, US Vice President JD Vance greeted and chatted with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistani Army Chief Syed Asim Munir. The flags of the United States, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan were placed in the corner of the room.
Special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, were also present. The Iranian delegation was led by Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

"There has never been a precedent for American and Iranian leaders meeting at this high level. The President has asked us to turn a new chapter, to change the relationship between the United States and Iran, and to extend a hand of goodwill to send a message to the Iranian people that if their leaders stop destabilizing the region and abandon their long-term ambitions to possess nuclear weapons, Washington is prepared to fundamentally change its relationship with Tehran," Vance stated.
According to the US Vice President, significant progress has been made in just the past few hours. "I expect to see further progress in the coming hours," he said.
The negotiations took place against the backdrop of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon. "It is impossible to enter the negotiation phase to reach a final agreement if hostilities do not cease on all fronts," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei posted on X.
The US Vice President told reporters in Switzerland that President Trump had "committed" the US "to seeing a complete ceasefire," adding that he "feels optimistic" about the situation in Lebanon.
"The United States has done more than any other party to prevent conflict in Lebanon over the past few months," he said when asked about Israel's attack on Lebanon. "Peace is never easy. Peace always requires effort and mutual concessions. The U.S. President has committed not only to peace between the U.S. and Iran, but to peace for the entire region. That is why we are here and doing everything we can to resolve this issue."
He noted that the meeting in Switzerland was the beginning of technical negotiations and would not immediately yield a solution.
"Today's meeting won't resolve all disagreements, but it will provide an opportunity for us to sit down together and figure out what matters most to all stakeholders, to address those issues and move towards a better future," Vance emphasized.
