US media reported on June 28 that the United States and Iran had agreed to end fighting and were expected to meet again to discuss their differences regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This news raised hopes of salvaging the interim peace agreement, which is under pressure from the tit-for-tat attacks between the two sides.
Axios, the first news outlet to report on the US-Iran ceasefire, quoted a senior US official as saying that Washington had decided to halt its attacks on Iran. Negotiations will resume on June 30th in Qatar.
"Technical negotiations are expected to continue across all areas of the memorandum. Both sides will temporarily cease hostilities, and ships will be able to move freely through the Strait of Hormuz," a US official said. He was referring to the 14-point memorandum agreed upon on June 17, under which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened to traffic.

The resumption of technical talks comes after days of attacks and retaliations between the two sides since an Iranian shell struck a Singapore- flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on June 25. Both the US and Iran have accused each other of violating the temporary ceasefire agreement signed on June 17.
Iran launched missiles and drones at US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in the early morning of June 28, shortly after US President Donald Trump threatened to retaliate if they did not comply with the agreement to end the war.
The meeting was initially planned in Switzerland to discuss Iran's nuclear program. Following the recent escalation, the location was moved to Doha (Qatar), and the focus of the negotiations shifted to the Strait of Hormuz.
Neither the US nor Iran has commented on the information so far.
However, on the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that the management of the Strait of Hormuz is entirely within Tehran's jurisdiction. Araghchi also warned that any attempts to use alternative shipping routes instead of those designated by Iran in this region could increase tensions and escalate the situation.
