In 2018, Green Food Ha Nam Co., Ltd. (Ninh Binh province) implemented a shiitake mushroom cultivation model in Mau Son commune. In September 2020, the Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology granted a certificate of registration for the collective trademark "Mau Son Shiitake Mushrooms, Lang Son". By 2025, this product is expected to receive OCOP 3-star certification.
Based on this reality, the People's Committee of the commune recognized this as a potential production direction to be replicated, creating a distinctive product of the Mau Son mountainous region. At the end of 2025, the People's Committee of the commune launched a project to establish a production chain linking commercial shiitake mushrooms with product consumption for the period 2025-2028. Eight households and two cooperatives (Mau Son Green Farm Cooperative and Mau Son Clean Agricultural Products Cooperative) in Khuoi Tang and Khuoi Cap villages participated in the project.
To implement the project, the People's Committee of the commune organized awareness campaigns and selected households that needed and met the criteria to participate. Accordingly, people received support in the form of seedlings, guidance on planting, caring for, and harvesting techniques, and were connected with businesses to sell their products.
Mr. Dang Dinh Hien, the officer in charge of the shiitake mushroom production facility at Green Food Ha Nam Co., Ltd., said: "In December 2025, the company supplied 15,000 mushroom spawn bags to cooperatives and households participating in the project. At the same time, we directly guided the households through the entire process, from cultivation and temperature and humidity control to harvesting. In addition, we established a Zalo group to facilitate communication and provide timely support to the people during the cultivation process."
Although the project has only been implemented for a short time, the mushrooms are growing and developing well, and the initial yield has brought income to the participating households. Ms. Dang Thi Xuan, from Khuoi Tang village, Mau Son commune, said: "Participating in the project, my family received 1,000 mushroom spawn bags. Initially, I was quite unfamiliar with it because this was my first time doing this model. However, after being guided by technical staff, I gradually grasped the care process. Growing mushrooms mainly requires focusing on maintaining the right humidity and temperature. After about a month of care, my family has harvested over 250 kg of mushrooms, worth over 20 million VND. If well cared for, the mushrooms can be harvested continuously, with each spawn bag producing multiple batches. My family plans to expand the scale when conditions permit."
Currently, all households and cooperatives participating in the mushroom cultivation project have harvested a total of approximately 3 tons. The product is being marketed with support from businesses and cooperatives, at a selling price of around 80,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Duong Trong Minh, Vice Chairman of the Mau Son Commune People's Committee, said: After a short period of implementation, participating households have basically grasped the process and techniques of mushroom cultivation and have initially earned income. In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will continue to promote and select eligible households to participate in order to expand the model, gradually forming a mushroom growing area and creating livelihoods for people in the area.
Developing a model for cultivating shiitake mushrooms not only helps diversify the agricultural products of Mau Son commune but also opens up new livelihood opportunities for people in the highlands.
