Nghia Trung commune in Dong Nai city has nearly 5,700 hectares of durian orchards, most of which are already producing fruit, with an average yield of over 20 tons per hectare.

Producing high-quality fruit

These days, the durian harvest in Nghia Trung is bustling. From early morning, traders come directly to the orchards to pick, sort, and transport the durians to the collection point.

The family of Mr. Ho Phuoc Khai (a member of the 36 Agricultural Cooperative, Nghia Trung commune) has 15 hectares of Thai durian trees currently being harvested. Thanks to proper planting and care techniques, along with favorable soil and weather conditions, the yield is estimated at 25 tons per hectare. With an average selling price of over 60,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, his family earns billions of VND. Significantly, over 350 tons of this high-quality Thai durian are purchased directly from the farm by traders, so there are no concerns about market demand.

Mr. Khai said: "To ensure the quality of durian, it is necessary to care for it according to the correct procedures and techniques, apply VietGAP standards, and use organic fertilizers; at the same time, closely monitor weather developments to devise timely and appropriate care methods. Thanks to the quality of the product, along with the signed agreements with reputable businesses and corporations, the market is very favorable."

Similarly, 23 members of the Duc Lieu Durian Cooperative (Nghia Trung commune) are also entering their main harvest season. The cooperative has 67 hectares of Thai durian, grown according to VietGAP standards, and has been assigned a planting area code, ensuring quality. As a result, traders come directly to the farm to purchase the durians at a price of over 60,000 VND/kg. Tran Nhu Y, Director of the Duc Lieu Durian Cooperative, happily stated: Compared to previous years, this year's harvest is more bountiful and the prices are better. Depending on the orchard, the average yield of the cooperative members is 20-25 tons/hectare. Because the planting area code has been assigned, businesses come directly to buy, so there are no worries about market demand.

Not only the Duc Lieu Durian Cooperative but also many other durian-growing cooperatives, groups, and clubs in Nghia Trung commune are simultaneously harvesting their main crop. The total production in 2026 is estimated at 90,000 tons. With high-quality durian, a bountiful harvest, and good prices, each household is earning billions of dong in profit.

According to Nguyen Van Luu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Trung commune: "At this time, visiting Nghia Trung, you can feel the vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere of the people and businesses in harvesting, buying, selling, and processing durian. Some families earn several billion dong. This is a very impressive source of income, helping other industries and services such as transportation, processing, export, and warehouse rental to develop. Along with high productivity and product quality, Nghia Trung commune has attracted 139 businesses and establishments involved in purchasing, packaging, and processing durian; of which 4 businesses have been granted packaging codes for export."

Nghia Trung commune has identified agriculture as its potential and strength. The commune aims to ensure that by 2027, 100% of eligible orchards and farms will receive support in obtaining planting area codes; and simultaneously, export packaging codes will be issued to these establishments.

Increase the value chain

Truong Thinh Phat Investment - Trading Co., Ltd. is one of the large and reputable enterprises in Nghia Trung commune that has been granted a packaging code for export. Currently, the company employs more than 350 workers performing various tasks, from harvesting, transporting, and warehousing to weighing, quality control, packaging, processing, and loading for export, including both fresh and frozen products.

Mr. Luu Ly Hoang, Deputy Director of the company, said: “Nghia Trung is not only the ‘durian capital’ of Dong Nai city with a large production volume, but also possesses many favorable factors regarding product quality, transportation connectivity, and a hub for durian from neighboring areas. With high-quality products, for many years, the company has signed agreements with cooperatives in the area and neighboring regions to purchase 100% of the produce; at the same time, we encourage farmers to sell directly to the company at the farm at the true value, not through intermediaries. This is because selling through middlemen would compromise the quality brand and make it difficult to compete with foreign partners.”

With the goal of producing durian that meets export standards, the local government is ready to support cooperatives and farmers in establishing planting area codes as a permit for export. According to Nguyen Van Luu, Chairman of the Nghia Trung Commune People's Committee: Currently, the commune has 11 planting area codes, an increase of 7 codes compared to the same period last year, and is striving to increase this to 28 codes in the near future. In addition, the locality is ready to cooperate with businesses and relevant agencies to build two more export packaging facilities, bringing the total to six.

In addition, the locality, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, issues planting area codes to people while still complying with legal regulations. At the same time, the locality also cooperates with the tax authorities to combat tax evasion and strictly manage planting area codes, packaging codes, etc. These are unprecedented measures, requiring every official and employee to work together to both attract investment and ensure strict management in accordance with the law.
