"Growing" happiness

From facing the risk of landslides and losing their homes every rainy season, the lives of more than 50 households in Dong Nuoc residential area, Sai Luong 2 village, Mo Vang commune have been "revived," with a promising new look.

Floods caused by the remnants of Typhoon No. 3 (September 2024) created a long crack, threatening the lives and property of 44 households in Sai Luong 2 and Sai Luong 3 villages. Immediately, local authorities urgently carried out relocation and site search for a resettlement area to stabilize the lives of the residents.

Nine households were informed and persuaded to donate 1.2 hectares of hilly and forested land to create a site for the construction of a resettlement area.

"Weekends with the People" were organized, mobilizing the participation of all officials, civil servants, and villagers to actively help harvest trees and crops, and quickly bring in machinery to begin leveling the ground. Along with that, the national power grid and centralized water supply systems were installed.

The land allocation process for households was conducted in a public, transparent, and fair manner. Just two months later, with government funding and local authorities providing labor, 44 households slated for emergency relocation, along with those who donated land, began rebuilding their homes and creating new lives. The resettlement area was named Dong Nuoc.

Over a year has passed, and the people of Dong Nuoc have been working together in unity to improve their lives. Their new homes are further away, but every day they diligently travel over 3 kilometers to tend to their cinnamon plantations.

These days, cinnamon is everywhere in Dong Nuoc. Thick, neatly coiled cinnamon bark is bundled up and carried by locals from the hills back to their homes. Cinnamon is also dried everywhere, filling the air with its delicate fragrance.

Ms. Sung Thi May shared: “When we moved to our new home, the first thing was to settle down, but then we had to immediately focus on economic development. Since there isn't much land for livestock farming here, we had to invest in the forest, diligently planting and caring for cinnamon trees. Thanks to that, our family's 2 hectares of cinnamon trees yield tens of millions of dong each year, providing a stable income to support our children's education.”

Reportedly, residents in the Dong Nuoc residential area have developed nearly 150 hectares of cinnamon trees, generating an income of over 2 billion VND per year.

Although their new homes are far from the forest and their livelihoods, geographical proximity has encouraged the local people to support each other in production, maintaining security and order, and building a new cultural life.

Self-governing groups and mediation teams have been established and are operating effectively. Community cultural and artistic activities are organized regularly, especially during holidays and festivals, creating a joyful and close-knit atmosphere.

Thanks to the government's attention in allocating resettlement land, my family was able to build a more spacious wooden house than our old one. The best part is that we have access to the national power grid here, making school closer for our children. Since we live together in one area, we often gather every evening to share about our lives and how to raise our children. Life is much happier and more fulfilling.

Mr. Giàng A Lồng from Đông Nuốc shared:

Even more encouraging is that the State is continuing to invest in improving Dong Nuoc's infrastructure. A 1.2-kilometer-long, 8-meter-wide concrete road is under construction (expected to be completed before December 31, 2025), replacing the dirt road and making it easier to transport agricultural products and supplies to residential and production areas in Dong Nuoc. Traders can now come directly to the area to buy cinnamon bark, and people no longer fear being exploited due to difficult transportation.

At the same time, the Sai Luong 2 village cultural center is also being urgently completed, becoming a place to organize technical training courses, disseminate scientific knowledge, organize cultural and sports activities, and hold meetings to discuss the village's overall economic development plans.

In Dong Nuoc, agricultural land is limited, so we have encouraged people to learn trades such as carpentry, motorcycle repair, and electrical work. The goal is for each family to not only rely on the forest but also have a stable source of income from other occupations.

Mr. Hoang Van Phuong - Secretary of the Party Branch of Sai Luong 2 village

We believe that, with the support of the State and the united efforts of the people, Dong Nuoc will not only be a place to live but also a foundation for building a prosperous and happy life.
