According to Mr. Tran Manh Cuong, Director of Giang Loc Auto Garage ( Nam Dinh ), the decision to weld or replace the exhaust pipe depends on the extent of the damage. If the exhaust pipe only has a small or moderate puncture, welding is a reasonable option, saving both time and money. Welding the exhaust pipe in these cases will fix the problem without affecting the vehicle's performance.
However, if the exhaust pipe has multiple punctures or shows signs of corrosion, welding it back together is only a temporary and ineffective long-term solution. In these cases, replacing the exhaust pipe is a better option, ensuring the safety of the engine and the driver, while also helping the vehicle operate more smoothly and reliably.
Unless the exhaust pipe is severely damaged, it shouldn't be replaced.
Although car exhaust pipes are made of highly durable stainless steel, because they operate at temperatures that can reach up to 427°C, they are susceptible to wear, rust, and cracking over time. When the following signs appear, drivers should consider replacing their exhaust pipes.
Loose exhaust pipe, making banging noises: The exhaust pipe is located under the vehicle; if it is cracked or damaged, it can become loose and cause banging noises when the vehicle is in motion. This is a clear sign that the exhaust pipe needs to be inspected and replaced promptly.
Burning smell coming from the exhaust pipe: When driving, if you notice an unpleasant smell coming from the exhaust pipe, this could be a sign of an exhaust gas leak. This needs to be repaired immediately to avoid affecting health and the environment.
Engine warning light illuminates: If the exhaust system is not regularly inspected and maintained, the engine warning light may come on due to a faulty oxygen sensor. Failure to replace the exhaust system promptly can lead to more serious damage and additional costs.
In all cases, drivers should take their vehicles to reputable garages to have the exhaust system checked when they notice any unusual signs. Welding may be a cost-effective option, but it should not be overused if the exhaust system is severely damaged. Timely replacement not only helps the vehicle operate smoothly, but also ensures driver safety and minimizes environmental pollution.
