Giant storage cabinets, or “power banks,” are popping up across China, riding the wave of renewable energy storage, reflecting soaring demand for storage as China accelerates its transition to clean energy.
At Narada Power Group’s Lin’an assembly line in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, rows of large, silver-white cabinets stand ready. They are giant “energy banks” designed to store electricity generated by wind and solar power for use during peak demand periods.
"Our large-scale storage system shipments have more than tripled year-on-year," said Tan Jiangguo, general manager of Narada Power's Lin'an Manufacturing Center. "We cooperate with grid operators, power companies and renewable energy groups to provide services such as peak load regulation and frequency regulation."
According to data from the National Energy Administration of China, as of the end of September this year, the total installed capacity of new generation energy storage systems in China had exceeded 100 million kW. This figure accounts for more than 40% of the global market share, making China the leading country in terms of deployment scale. Behind this growth is the boom in wind and solar power, especially in the northern and northwestern provinces.
"The Chinese government has abolished mandatory electricity storage requirements, but in fact, companies have increased investment in storage facilities. In addition, with the development of the new energy industry in recent years, the existing reserve capacity of the grid can no longer keep up with the growing electricity demand," said Dong Yunfan, analyst at Sublime China Information.
China's electricity consumption is currently increasing rapidly, especially in high-tech manufacturing, electric vehicles, and battery materials. To achieve the goal of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, China is forced to expand the space for renewable energy integration, of which storage is a must, and the explosion of electricity storage devices is to catch up with this wave.
