Traveling during Tet (Lunar New Year) is not only popular among young people but has also become a trend for Vietnamese families. This trend has contributed to the impressive figure of 15.5 million visitors to the tourism industry in January 2025.
During the Lunar New Year holiday, pack your bags and go!
This year, Mr. Nguyen Anh Chien from Dinh Cong ( Hanoi ) chose to take his family to Sapa, Lao Cai for a relaxing Tet holiday. According to Mr. Chien, the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake lasts 9 days, so destinations far from Hanoi like Sapa are a suitable choice. Besides the fresh air, tourists in Sapa can experience the Tet atmosphere of the highland people and may even see snow if the temperature drops.
With only three people in the family and light luggage, Mr. Chien drove his car himself to Sapa with his wife and child, without needing to book a tour with a travel agency. After a 4-day/3-night stay at Topas Ecolodge, Mr. Chien and his family returned to a homestay in Moc Chau, Son La to admire the cherry blossoms and plum blossoms in full bloom.
Similar to Mr. Chien's family, Mr. Nguyen The Kien from Nguyen Thai Hoc (Hanoi) also experienced celebrating Tet in the highlands, but through a tour package from Vietravel Group. Following Vietravel's 4-day/3-night Hanoi - Ha Giang tour in the Northeast region, Mr. Kien experienced the luxurious H'mong Village resort (Trang Kim, Quan Ba district, Ha Giang province) and visited famous landmarks in this northernmost region of Vietnam. Mr. Kien said he had heard about the majestic landscapes of Ha Giang for a long time, but had to wait until his children had a long holiday like Tet to have the time to visit.
In Ha Giang, besides the landmarks in Quan Ba, Kien and his group also explored Meo Vac and Dong Van, home to the ancient town and the famous Nho Que River.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan from Phu Dien (Hanoi) and her friends from the retirement group booked a tour to Tam Chuc Pagoda with Hanoitourist. Last year, around this time, they also went to Huong Pagoda together. Early in the morning, Ms. Lan and her friends gathered at the Hanoitourist departure point and returned on the same day. The cost for such day tours is usually under 1 million VND per person.
Many products for tourists to choose from.
According to Ms. Le Thi Hong Hanh, Director of Dat Viet Tour, leisure and pilgrimage tours are popular choices for many tourists. Since the beginning of the Year of the Snake (2015), Dat Viet Tour has organized tours for over 5,000 tourists. Popular tours include Hanoi - Hoa Binh; Hanoi - Sapa; Hanoi - Con Dao; Hanoi - Ha Long; Hanoi - Da Nang; Hanoi - Nha Trang; and Hanoi - Phu Quoc.
Tours to see plum blossoms and cherry blossoms in Moc Chau are a popular choice among young people.
"Pilgrimage programs from Hanoi to Con Dao, or destinations like Huong Pagoda, Tam Truc Pagoda, and the Trang An - Bai Dinh area are popular choices among Dat Viet Tour's customers. In addition, the trend of visiting Moc Chau to see the plum blossoms, especially among young people, accounts for a large portion of our bookings," Ms. Hanh informed.
According to Ms. Hanh, tour costs this year are not as expensive as last year. For example, a Hanoi - Ha Long tour (2 days/1 night) or a Hanoi - Ninh Binh tour (2 days/1 night) costs only around 2 million VND all-inclusive. A resort tour with hot springs in Hoa Binh (2 days/1 night) starts from 2.5 million VND. A Hanoi - Con Dao tour (3 days/2 nights) starts from 11 million VND. Tours from Hanoi to Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc range from 5 million to 9 million VND per person.
According to Indonesia's Tempo newspaper, Vietnam has been recognized for its spectacular tourism recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, leading the Southeast Asian region. In 2024, Vietnam welcomed nearly 17.6 million international visitors, recovering 98% compared to the record level of 2019, the period before the pandemic. This impressive figure surpassed other popular destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia. Following Vietnam are Malaysia in second place with a recovery rate of 94%, Thailand 88%, Singapore 86%, Indonesia 86%, and the Philippines 72%.
By 2025, Vietnam's tourism industry aims to welcome 22-23 million international visitors and 120-130 million domestic visitors.
According to a representative from Hanoitourist, the cherry blossom and plum blossom viewing tour in Moc Chau, Son La, is one of the most popular programs offered by this travel agency at the beginning of the Year of the Snake. With the Hanoi - Moc Chau program (2 days/1 night, or 3 days/2 nights), each tourist on the combo package only costs between 2 and 3 million VND.
In addition, Hanoitourist designs several segmented tours such as the Northeast tour: Hanoi - Ha Giang - Cao Bang - Bac Kan, with a cost of 4 to 5 million VND per person.
Meanwhile, the majority of group tours consist of pilgrimages and spiritual tourism trips from Hanoi to Huong Pagoda, Tam Truc Pagoda, and Trang An - Bai Dinh. Depending on the location, Hanoitourist sells tours from 300,000 to 900,000 VND per person.
To serve tourists at the beginning of the year, Ms. Ta Thi Tu Uyen, Director of the Product and Service Department of Vietravel, said that while the programs and routes remain the same, the company always designs them in a special and memorable way to touch the emotions of customers.
