On May 15, Microsoft announced the latest version of iPhone Link for Windows 11, which can receive notifications, send messages, and answer calls from an iPhone paired with a computer. Most Americans use iPhones. Thanks to the ability to connect products, Mac computers have taken market share from Windows computers in recent years.
By 2022, Apple will account for about 10% of total global PC shipments, with Windows computers accounting for the rest, according to research firm IDC.
Microsoft’s move could remove a barrier for computer buyers who want to buy a Mac to make it easier to use their iPhone. Phone Link was previously only available for Android phones. However, the program doesn’t have as many features as Apple’s Messages for Mac. It works over Bluetooth, according to The Verge, and requires the iPhone to have the Link to Windows app installed.
Once installed, the Windows computer will receive notifications from the user's iPhone. It does not support group messaging via iMessage, nor does it allow sending photos or videos . Phone Link only shows sent or received messages, so if the user sends a message on the phone, they will not see the message history in the Windows app.
Microsoft started rolling out Phone Link for iOS on Windows 11 last month, supporting 39 languages in 85 markets. The company notes that it will take a few weeks for it to reach everyone.
