Causes and treatments of shoulder pain

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. This type of injury will cause pain, weakness and reduced range of motion of the joint. Another common cause of shoulder pain is arthritis. Elderly people are a group at high risk of this condition, according to the health website Healthline (America).

Shoulder rotator cuff injuries are a common cause of shoulder pain

Shoulder pain can be well treated with the following methods:

Exercise and stretch

Gentle exercises and stretches in the shoulder area are natural remedies to help relieve shoulder pain in cases of mild pain. Exercising properly not only helps reduce pain in the shoulders and neck, but also helps reduce stiffness when moving joints, thereby improving range of motion and joint flexibility.

Apply warm and cold compresses

This is another natural method that people with shoulder pain can do at home without medical intervention. Cold compresses are often used immediately after an injury, such as a fall or heavy lifting, to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Meanwhile, warm compresses help increase blood flow and reduce stiffness when moving joints.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is a popular and effective treatment option for shoulder pain, especially for people with severe injuries or the elderly. The physical therapist will guide us through exercises that strengthen the shoulder muscles, improve joint range of motion, and reduce pain.

For people with shoulder pain who see a doctor, physical therapy is often used as the first line of treatment. In many cases, this is very effective and helps prevent future shoulder damage.

Medicine

Pain relievers such as acetaminophen and opioids can help control pain from arthritis, including the shoulder joint. Additionally, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, can also help reduce inflammation and pain.

Although pain relievers can help control pain, they do not treat the underlying cause of the pain, such as arthritis or injury, and can cause side effects, especially when used long-term.

Injections or surgery

Cortisone injections are prescribed to temporarily relieve pain and inflammation elsewhere in the body, such as shoulder pain caused by arthritis. In addition, hyaluronic acid injections also reduce inflammation, reduce pain and improve joint movement.

Surgery is usually only used in cases where other treatments have been unsuccessful. Depending on the condition, the doctor will use shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder replacement or some other method, according to Healthline (America).
