Learning from and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, ethics, and style through practical and concrete actions, Cam Xuyen district (Ha Tinh province) is spreading a meaningful model of supporting and sponsoring orphaned children in difficult circumstances.
Orphaned at a young age, Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc and his siblings (from Cam Quan commune, Cam Xuyen district) were taken in by their maternal grandmother.
At just 12 years old, Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc, from Cam Quan commune, has been living as an orphan. His parents tragically passed away due to illness, and their small house, once filled with laughter, is now locked and overgrown with weeds. Phuc and his older sister have been taken in and cared for by their maternal grandmother.
Not only that, the boy also suffers from congenital anemia, gallbladder atrophy, and poor health. Once a month, Phuc has to receive a blood transfusion at the Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital. The costs of living expenses and medication make life extremely difficult for the three of them.
With their parents having passed away from cancer, sisters Bui Thi Chau and Bui Thi Hang from Cam Duong commune have had to fend for themselves.
For several years now, since their parents passed away from cancer, sisters Bui Thi Chau (born in 2007) and Bui Thi Hang (born in 2005) in Cam Duong commune have been supporting each other to get by. Despite the care from relatives and local organizations, nothing can fill the void and overcome the difficulties in their lives. To earn extra money, in addition to attending Cam Xuyen High School, Hang has to take on part-time jobs.
Along with Phuc and Chau, hundreds of orphaned children in Cam Xuyen district are facing difficult circumstances and need the help and support of the community. According to a survey by the District Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, as of December 2022, there were 753 orphaned children in the district, including 23 children who lost both parents and 730 children who lost one parent. Besides some children who have adequate living conditions, there are still 170 children facing particularly difficult circumstances and 432 children facing difficult circumstances.
Faced with this situation, in order to partially compensate for the disadvantages and losses, ensure living and learning conditions for orphaned children, and help them become useful members of society, Cam Xuyen district has mobilized social resources.
Each child who receives sponsorship has a notebook to track the sponsorship process.
Since the end of 2022, the entire district has seen 25 agencies, units, businesses, and individuals commit to sponsoring 35 orphaned children. The sponsorship period ranges from 3 to 20 years, with a sponsorship amount of 1 to 1.5 million VND per month per child.
In addition to agencies such as the District Party Committee, the District People's Committee, the People's Affairs Committee, the school sector, the District Police, and the District Children's Protection Fund, the movement has spread and received support from officials and civil servants in 10 communes and towns, as well as businesses inside and outside the district.
Mr. Dang Quoc Hien, Head of the Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Department of Cam Xuyen District, the permanent unit of the District's Child Protection and Care Fund, shared: “With the strong support of the District Party Committee, since October 2022, the Cam Xuyen District People's Committee has implemented a plan to launch and establish the Cam Xuyen District Child Protection and Care Fund. In addition to sending open letters to all agencies, units, and businesses inside and outside the district, district leaders have directly participated in working groups to organize meetings and connect with children living away from home in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to call for donations to the fund.”
Thanks to decisive efforts, the fund has so far raised over 2 billion VND. In addition, the district has allocated 300 million VND in its 2023 budget to support orphans; this money will be used to provide gifts to all orphaned children in difficult and especially difficult circumstances during holidays, festivals, and the start of the school year, as well as to organize activities and provide sponsorship for some orphans.”
Representatives from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Cam Xuyen district presented financial assistance to Nguyen Van Hoang (Cam Duong commune).
According to Mr. Hien, in order for support for orphaned children in difficult circumstances to be most meaningful, organizations and individuals providing support or sponsorship must commit to the amount of support, the start date, and the duration of the support.
In addition to financial support, sponsoring organizations and individuals regularly visit and encourage the children, providing them with the necessary support, encouragement, and motivation to excel in their studies and become useful citizens.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, the grandmother of Nguyen Dinh Huu Phuc (Cam Quan commune), expressed: “I am deeply moved that the children's circumstances have received attention and support from agencies and organizations. Since January 2023, the Cam Xuyen District People's Committee has sponsored Phuc and provided him with 1.5 million VND per month until 2033. This is not only a source of material encouragement but also a source of spiritual comfort, helping him to have more confidence to overcome difficulties, strive to excel in his studies, and not let down everyone's kindness.”
Given the humanitarian significance of the model and the support from organizations and individuals, in the coming time, Cam Xuyen district will continue to call for resources with the highest goal of ensuring that all orphaned children in difficult circumstances in the area are sponsored, and that more children receive sponsorship.
The group of junior high schools in Cam Xuyen district has adopted two orphaned sisters in Cam My commune.
Cam Xuyen District Party Secretary Nguyen Van Thanh said: “Learning from President Ho Chi Minh's compassion and care for the people's lives, after much deliberation, Cam Xuyen district has implemented a model of sponsoring and supporting disadvantaged orphans. Although newly implemented, with a systematic approach and commitments regarding the sponsorship period, we believe that the model will truly provide special fathers and mothers, helping these children overcome difficulties. And we hope that, in the long term, the children sponsored today, when they become successful, will return to support other children, thus continuing to expand and spread these humane and meaningful values.”
"There are still many orphaned children in the area who need care and assistance. With the tradition of 'mutual support and compassion,' we hope that organizations, individuals, and philanthropists inside and outside the district will continue to accompany and share the difficulties with orphaned children in our district," Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh expressed.
