Interesting stories about journalism.

I wasn't entirely surprised, but I was also taken aback, that journalist Ho Quang Loi, former Standing Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, had published a new book. It wasn't surprising, as I was already familiar with his vibrant creative energy. However, I was surprised because his new book, seemingly purely journalistic with its evocative title: "Truth, Justice, and the Pen" (Hanoi Publishing House, 2025), is a substantial 621-page volume, reflecting current events, offering insightful cultural interpretations, and written in a style that is both careful and imaginative, elevating the beauty of literature.

This is Ho Quang Loi's eleventh book, but it is thanks to his talent and sharp intellect that journalist Ho Quang Loi avoids repeating himself. The publication of the book "Truth, Justice, and the Pen" on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism naturally aims at addressing the topicality that is the essence of journalism.

Readers, however, are more discerning; they need fresh knowledge, they expect insightful perspectives from a talented journalist who was once beloved and trusted in addressing emerging issues of contemporary life. I believe Ho Quang Loi has achieved this, which is why the book is so engaging and interesting.

The book cover.

It must be said that the book is quite substantial, comprising 8 chapters, with a dense and comprehensive amount of knowledge related to current events, culture, and especially journalism. Its breadth and depth will surely satisfy even the most discerning readers. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this book will be a standard knowledge guide not only for those working in journalism but also a valuable resource for cultural researchers, cultural managers, entrepreneurs, and leaders involved in the planning and development of culture and society.

It is no coincidence that in this valuable book, the first article that Ho Quang Loi chose to place in the number one position is "A Century of Struggle for the Country and the People," based on the story of Uncle Ho—the founder of revolutionary journalism in Vietnam. I completely agree with Ho Quang Loi's explanation: "Nguyen Ai Quoc clearly recognized the particularly important role of journalism. At the end of 1924, upon arriving in Guangzhou (China), Nguyen Ai Quoc immediately proceeded to launch a political newspaper."

Today, as the country enters a new era, still needing the dedication, commitment, and sacrifice of journalists, Ho Quang Loi's words resonated with many journalists, including myself, who nodded in agreement with the profound wisdom and sincerity in his statement: “Vietnamese and world journalism is undergoing an unprecedented and profound transformation in its methods of practice, but the professional ethics, ideals, and mindset of revolutionary journalists remain unchanged. We practice our profession to protect justice and righteousness, and for the benefit of the country and its people.”

In this new book, Ho Quang Loi devotes his efforts to analyzing and explaining the most fundamental, important, topical, and widely discussed issues of modern Vietnamese journalism. These range from "The mindset of a writer" to "Journalistic ethics," from "The light of humanism" and ethical journalism to "Stronger than a sword" and "Fire tests gold, hardship tests... the pen," from "Working together to win" to the everyday struggles of "When journalism grapples with making ends meet." And especially, the hottest issue in journalism today is social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and journalism, with the most topical question being "AI - an ally or an adversary?"...

The fascinating issues of journalism in this book can be likened to comprehensive, insightful, and profound research papers, yet equally captivating and persuasive. Ho Quang Loi also once stated in a journalistic work, essentially: At the heart of journalism is culture. I would like to quote more insightful passages from the book "Truth, Justice, and the Pen," but I don't want to "take over" the reader's part, so I'll leave it to those who will engage with and contemplate this book.
