Five years ago, Dang Van Hung left the red basalt soil region of K'bang, Gia Lai province, and traveled over 1,000km to Quang Ninh province to start a new life. Leaving his hometown at the age of 36, escaping a life of farming and precarious income, Hung's only assets were his physical strength and determination to change his life in the mining region. Now, Hung has become a skilled miner at Tunneling Workshop 8, Quang Hanh Coal Company - TKV, earning over 30 million VND per month.
Looking back on his journey, Hung recalled a chance encounter in 2020. Witnessing the sight of miners enjoying vacations , he wondered, "What kind of job is so great?" From that question, he began researching underground mining and eventually made the bold decision to pursue a career as a miner.
Starting with almost no prior professional training, Mr. Hung received basic training at the Vietnam Coal and Mineral College. After studying and practicing, thanks to his intelligence and diligence, his skills quickly became solid. His first shifts went smoothly, and with each passing day, he accumulated more experience. Before long, Mr. Hung had mastered all the technical operations, become proficient in using the machinery, and achieved top productivity in the workshop. "With a high and stable income, I no longer worry much about finances . I can visit my hometown a couple of times a year, and I confidently book plane tickets to make travel easier," shared coal miner Dang Van Hung.

Leaving the highlands and forests, driven by a desire for a better life, many young people from ethnic minority groups have chosen the coal industry as their career path. From the challenging early days of apprenticeship to becoming proficient in the deep mines, their journey is a story of willpower, discipline, and faith in honest labor, gradually building a stable, sustainable, and proud future.
The early days of studying at the Vietnam Coal and Mineral College were unforgettable for Mua A Sinh, a Hmong man from Ho Ta village, Muong Kim commune, Lai Chau province. Changing his living environment and beginning days of concentrated living with higher discipline, each lecture and each practical session seemed like a challenge to Sinh. The perseverance and training methods of the school's teachers helped the young man gradually adapt to the demands of underground mining. In particular, the commitment of "Learning guarantees a salary, and graduation guarantees employment" further strengthened Sinh's belief and gave him the confidence to commit to his chosen path.
Working at Thong Nhat Coal Company, miner Mua A Sinh constantly strives to improve himself and quickly adapts to the underground working environment. From the first shift handover of the day to every hour of production underground, Mr. Sinh always strictly adheres to safety procedures, working diligently and tirelessly. His knowledge, hard work, and sense of responsibility have helped Mua A Sinh consistently maintain high productivity and safety during his shifts.
Coal miner Mùa A Sình said: "My average income is 25-27 million VND/month, with the highest month reaching 40 million VND. My family back home has now escaped poverty and has some savings. The benefits at Thống Nhất Coal Mine are very good, so I've encouraged my younger brother to come and work with me."
However, for miners like Dang Van Hung and Mua A Sinh, high income doesn't come naturally; it's earned through night shifts, long days away from home, the effort to master modern equipment, and strict adherence to safety procedures. For them, the fruits of their labor not only bring a stable economic life but also represent the right answer and a source of pride in having chosen the right profession. Now, for them, the mine is their home, the mining region is their second homeland, where these young miners are striving every day to nurture their dreams of a long-term commitment.

The encouraging figures regarding the income of coal miners accurately reflect the attractiveness of the profession to many people from all regions of the country. In addition to high income, coal miners also enjoy many benefits commensurate with their contributions.
For some, income figures may simply be an economic measure. But for the coal industry, it's also a measure of change, a testament to the faith of generations of miners in a laborious industry that is becoming more modern and humane day by day. From today's stories of high incomes, what remains is not just the salary, but the value of honest labor, the most enduring asset that miners carry with them throughout their lives.
