Efforts to combat plastic waste

Việt NamViệt Nam01/10/2024

To implement the "Anti-Plastic Waste" movement, the Provincial People's Committee has directed departments, agencies, districts, cities, towns, the Fatherland Front, and political and social organizations to urgently carry out propaganda and mobilization activities with specific content to all subordinate units and the community to act and effectively respond to the movement. At the same time, relevant sectors and localities continue to implement solutions for managing, collecting, transporting, and processing plastic waste to prevent and minimize its discharge into the environment, initially creating a change in people's awareness and actions.

Efforts to combat plastic waste

Women's association members in Tu Vu commune, Thanh Thuy district, are replicating the model of "Reducing plastic waste in public places," contributing to the fight against plastic waste.

Many policies implemented by various levels, sectors, and localities have had a positive impact, limiting the use and disposal of plastic waste. The establishment and maintenance of teams and groups for collecting solid household waste and plastic waste; investment in additional specialized equipment and transport vehicles; the construction of collection and transfer points; attention to the collection of service fees for the collection, transportation, and processing of household waste; and the maintenance of treatment measures, investment in pollution remediation, and infrastructure improvement are effective solutions for managing and minimizing plastic waste throughout the province.

At various agencies and units, along with intensified propaganda and mobilization efforts, many practical activities in response to the "Anti-Plastic Waste" movement have been organized appropriately, attracting the participation of a large number of officials and employees. Notable examples include the Education and Training sector launching movements such as: "Small Actions - Big Meaning," collecting plastic waste and scrap materials for sale to raise funds to support poor students with the determination to overcome difficulties in life and studies; and "Anti-Plastic Waste" and building a model of "Safe, Friendly, and Equitable Schools."

The health sector has established a Steering Committee to implement "Plastic Waste Reduction" at affiliated units and medical facilities in the area; incorporated the criterion of "reducing plastic waste" into the quality improvement regulations of the units; and implemented the 3R model to minimize the use and increase the reuse and recycling of plastic bags and plastic products in various activities...

Notably, many agencies and units have incorporated criteria for minimizing plastic waste generation into their internal regulations and operating procedures; mandating the non-use of non-biodegradable, single-use plastic products in all activities, meetings, conferences, and seminars. To date, 100% of departments, agencies, district and city People's Committees, political and social organizations, supermarkets, and tourist areas have regulations, commitments, and implementation plans on combating plastic waste.

The campaign against plastic waste has also been widely and effectively implemented by the Vietnam Fatherland Front and political and social organizations at all levels, reaching officials, members, and the community through activities and movements to reduce plastic waste. In many localities in the province, women's association members have also actively responded to the "Say No to Plastic Waste" movement through activities and models such as carrying reusable shopping bags to the market and reducing plastic waste in public places.

Youth union members enthusiastically participated in activities such as "Green Sunday," "Volunteer Saturday," organizing campaigns with the theme "Youth of the Ancestral Land responding to the movement against plastic waste," distributing environmentally friendly cloth bags, and organizing the "Exchange Waste for Gifts" program...

Comrade Nguyen Thanh Huyen, Head of the Movement Department of the Provincial Youth Union, said: “All activities include propaganda, mobilization, and education to raise awareness and responsibility among cadres, union members, youth, and people in reducing the use of plastic waste. Simultaneously, youth organizations are also actively cleaning village roads and alleys; collecting, sorting, and processing household waste; and promoting and mobilizing union members, youth, and people to reduce the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic products...”

With the involvement of the entire political system and the enthusiastic participation of the people, plastic waste in the province has been decreasing, contributing to the nationwide effort to achieve the goals of the "Anti-Plastic Waste" movement.
