Efforts to escape poverty after settling down.

With the spirit of "Leaving no one behind," the sturdy houses that have been built have become a support system, providing motivation for the people of Lao Cai to strive and overcome poverty and stabilize their lives.

Lao Cai is one of the localities that quickly achieved the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, providing solid and safe housing for tens of thousands of households. The province "reached the finish line" in eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses more than two months ahead of the target set by the Prime Minister. To achieve this result, Lao Cai demonstrated strong political determination, implemented many innovative approaches, and mobilized the strength of the entire political system, the business community, and the people.

Comrade Sung Thanh Cong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Co commune, said: "We have determined that eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is only the beginning, and the ultimate goal is to help people stabilize their lives and escape poverty sustainably. The commune leadership has directed the Party branches, the Fatherland Front, and political and social organizations to closely monitor each village, both encouraging them and supporting them in connecting with preferential loan sources. When people have stable housing, are determined, and with the support of the government, poverty alleviation will truly be sustainable."

Beyond simply having a sturdy home, many families, after receiving support to replace temporary or dilapidated houses, have turned stable housing into a driving force to focus on economic development. As a result, numerous households have risen out of poverty, achieving increasingly stable lives, affirming the sustainable effectiveness of this humane policy.

Mr. Giàng A Lo from Bản Công village, Hạnh Phúc commune, shared: “My family is classified as a poor household and has been living in a dilapidated house for many years. Thanks to the government's support of 60 million VND to build a new house, my family now has a decent place to live. From this, my family is determined to rise out of poverty, raise chickens and pigs, and take on extra work to increase our income and stabilize our lives.”

In Nhẻo village, Châu Quế commune, Mr. Triệu Văn Giang has built a spacious house of over 70 square meters thanks to a 60 million VND grant from the government. Mr. Giang shared: “As a family with particularly difficult circumstances, and myself suffering from acute pancreatitis requiring frequent hospital visits, I have always strived to improve my situation. Especially after having a solid house, my family has received support from the local government to access loans from the Social Policy Bank to develop forest-based economic activities and escape poverty.”

"I am very excited and will try my best to work and produce so that my life will get better and better."

Mr. Trieu Van Giang shared.

As a particularly disadvantaged commune in Lao Cai province, Chau Que commune's economic landscape has improved significantly after many families received support to build sturdy houses.

According to Le Quang Dao, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chau Que commune: “From the beginning of 2025, with the involvement of the entire political system, Chau Que commune has implemented many methods suitable to its actual conditions to propagate and mobilize poor households to seize opportunities and take advantage of state support funds to build and repair houses. Accordingly, the entire commune has supported 26 houses, including 21 new houses and 5 houses for repair, with a total cost of over 1.4 billion VND. Most households, after receiving housing support, have strived to improve their economic situation and escape poverty.”

“The housing support policy is not just about material value; it has become a spiritual boost, sparking a change in people's awareness. From waiting and relying on others, many households have shifted to being proactive and self-reliant. This is the core value, the most sustainable aspect of poverty reduction,” affirmed the Chairman of the People's Committee of Chau Que commune.

Over the years, Lao Cai province has paid special attention to sustainable poverty reduction, especially the implementation of measures to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, and to support the construction of housing for families of revolutionary martyrs and their relatives; poor and near-poor households; and households affected by natural disasters, storms, and floods. Following the direction of the Prime Minister and in response to the nationwide emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses," since September 2024, Lao Cai province has thoroughly reviewed needs and developed a plan to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses with the goal of supporting the construction of nearly 13,000 houses with a total budget of approximately 663 billion VND.

Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Xuan Truong affirmed: "The program and emulation movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide, launched by the Prime Minister, is an unprecedented large-scale social welfare program. It is a special project that is very much in line with the people's wishes, strengthens the people's trust in the Party and the State, awakens the people's strength, and serves as a foundation for solidarity and unity among the people."

Despite facing many difficulties, especially the impact of typhoon No. 3 in 2024, with the determination of the entire political system, the involvement of all levels, sectors, organizations, businesses and the people in the province, by June 15, 2025, the entire province had completed 100% of the housing support under the Project - two months earlier than the Project's planned target and is one of the localities nationwide that completed the Project's goal early.”

In reality, once people have stable housing, they not only focus on developing their family economy but also actively participate in community movements such as contributing labor and resources to build concrete roads, repair cultural centers, and build new rural areas. This is a crucial foundation for strengthening national unity, improving people's lives, and realizing the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.
