Scars of war
The Thuan Thanh War Invalids Rehabilitation Center, under the Department of War Invalids and Martyrs ( Ministry of Interior ), is currently treating 84 of the most severely wounded and sick war invalids in the country. Most of the war invalids here have severe disabilities ranging from 81% to 100%. Some have lost both arms, legs, or eyesight; the majority have spinal cord injuries, paralysis of the lower half of the body, loss of sensation, and require wheelchairs or mobility aids. Many still have shrapnel and bomb fragments in their bodies, and also suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney stones.

Mr. Truong Dang Binh, Deputy Director of the Center, said: “When the weather changes or the seasons shift, the wounded soldiers' bodies ache and convulse, requiring painkiller injections in areas where the skin is still soft. Even a small scratch can become a difficult-to-heal ulcer, or even life-threatening. However, these wounded soldiers always remain resilient. They don't give up or become dependent. They seek knowledge and work to prove themselves and continue to contribute to their families and society.”
A prime example is war veteran Le Duc Luan (from Phu Tho province) – who persevered in his studies for a long time to obtain a Level 2 Technical Worker certificate in electronics repair. With his qualifications and skills, he opened a shop repairing and supplying electronic components; he also invested in generators and sound systems for weddings. His family's finances gradually stabilized, allowing him to provide for his four children's education and upbringing. Despite his advanced age, he remains passionate about reading, learning, and following current events. He always reminds his children and grandchildren to live responsibly and to cultivate patriotism and national pride.
Not relying on state support, and deeply imbued with President Ho Chi Minh's teaching, "Wounded soldiers may be disabled, but they are not useless," these veterans always maintain unwavering faith, willpower, and determination. Depending on their health, they still try to take care of themselves, share some household chores, and do extra work to help their families.
Love soothes the pain.
Thuan Thanh War Invalids Rehabilitation Center is a significant historical site, preserving the indomitable spirit and unwavering will of outstanding individuals. In the atmosphere of the whole country commemorating the War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27th, the Center welcomes many delegations from the central government to local authorities and units who come to visit, encourage, and express their gratitude.

The delegation from Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Newton Thuan Thanh Kindergarten presented a deeply moving cultural program. After performing the song "The Homeland Calls My Name" as a tribute to wounded and disabled soldiers, student Le Nguyen Duy Hung shared: "Coming here, I feel more deeply the pain and suffering of the wounded and disabled soldiers, the sacrifices of our ancestors, and understand more about the glorious history of our nation. I also recognize the meaning and value of peace."
“The Party and the State have always paid special attention to caring for those who have rendered meritorious service, especially severely wounded and sick soldiers like us, through the establishment and maintenance of rehabilitation centers. This is a common home where staff and employees treat, care for, and share the pain and suffering with each wounded and sick soldier day and night with the sense of responsibility and affection of family members,” shared wounded soldier Nguyen Van Thanh (from Thanh Hoa province).
With 25 years of dedication to the Center, Dr. Pham Thi Pha, Deputy Head of the Health Department at Thuan Thanh War Invalids Rehabilitation Center, shared: Due to their circumstances and severe injuries, the war invalids and sick soldiers are very sensitive and easily angered. Besides high professional expertise, the medical staff must be compassionate, skillful, gentle, and attentive; not only providing medical assistance but also acting as friends and comrades, offering comfort and encouragement.
Under the warm roof of the nursing home, where patients and caregivers share a deep sense of empathy, 15 nurses have become wives of wounded and disabled soldiers. They dedicate their lives to caring for them, building loving family homes with their affection. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Mai, wife of wounded soldier Vu Van Thang, recounted: “I was also a soldier, and I started working as a nurse at the Center in 1976. Besides my professional responsibilities, caring for him was also a matter of camaraderie and fellowship. From empathy, we became husband and wife, and together we raised three children to adulthood.”
Commemorating the Day of War Invalids and Martyrs on July 27th is an occasion for everyone to remember their roots and express gratitude to war invalids, martyrs, and those who have made contributions to the nation. The beautiful actions and practical deeds of society as a whole, and of the Thuan Thanh War Invalids Rehabilitation Center in particular, help those who have made contributions feel cared for and supported. Here, life remains vibrant thanks to the willpower and resilience of the war invalids and sick soldiers.
