Born and raised in Nam Gianh commune, in 1994, Dr. Dinh Thi Huong was assigned to work at Minh Hoa Regional General Hospital. When she first arrived in the mountainous region, she thought she would work there for a few years and then return home. However, the genuine kindness of the people there made her decide to stay.

In the early years of Dr. Huong's work in Minh Hoa, the mountainous region's healthcare sector faced numerous difficulties. Medicines were scarce, medical equipment was meager, and conditions for examination and treatment were limited, especially with malaria remaining a major concern for the local population. In light of this reality, Dr. Huong boldly proposed supplementing treatment medications and strengthening emergency medical facilities.

In addition, she actively promoted malaria prevention and control measures among the local people, such as carrying preventative medication when going into the forest, sleeping under mosquito nets, treating mosquito nets with chemicals, and maintaining environmental hygiene... Thanks to the efforts of the medical team, including Dr. Huong, malaria in the area has gradually been brought under control.

In addition to her involvement in internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Huong also served as the Head of the Intensive Care Unit. This period left her with many memorable experiences. To save patients' lives, she and her colleagues faced immense pressure while handling emergency cases involving acute myocardial infarction, severe accidents, and more.

Mr. Dinh Ngoc Van, a resident of Minh Hoa commune, who was treated by Dr. Huong during an acute myocardial infarction, recalled: “I experienced severe chest pain and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Thanks to Dr. Huong and the medical team's prompt and timely emergency treatment, I am still alive today.”

In 2015, after further study and professional development, Dr. Dinh Thi Huong completed her Specialist Doctor Level I program in Internal Medicine. Currently, she is the Deputy Director of Minh Hoa Regional General Hospital, in charge of the Infectious Diseases Department.

Not only is she highly skilled professionally, but she is also actively involved in scientific research with many topics of practical value, such as: studying the situation of drug use in the hospital or surveying the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding blood transfusion safety. The research results have contributed to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment and management at the unit.

During the complex period of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Dinh Thi Huong was one of the frontline healthcare workers fighting the disease. She was directly involved in administering vaccines to the public. On some days, the number of people coming for vaccinations was so large that the medical team had to work from early morning until nearly midnight.

"We only had time to grab a quick drink of water and a sandwich before continuing our work. Our protective suits were always soaked with sweat, but no one thought about their own hardship; they only hoped that people could get vaccinated safely," Ms. Huong recounted.

Not only is Dr. Huong dedicated to her professional work, but she is also loved by many patients for her compassionate heart. Throughout her more than three decades of service, she has encountered many poor patients and those in particularly difficult circumstances.

Mr. Ho Keo, from Dan Hoa commune, whose child was treated at the hospital, emotionally shared: “My family is facing great difficulties, and my child was sick and had to stay in the hospital for a long time. Fortunately, Doctor Huong provided dedicated treatment, mobilized support for food expenses, and encouraged the family a great deal.”

Although she could have chosen to work in places with better benefits, Dr. Dinh Thi Huong still wishes to continue working at the hospital in the mountainous region. "In my opinion, doctors, regardless of their position, must prioritize medical ethics and responsibility. Wherever people are still struggling, there is still a need for dedicated doctors," Dr. Huong confided.
