TASS further reported that there was no "major damage" caused by the earthquake; however, "buildings are currently being inspected to see if there is any potential damage."
The Shiveluch volcano is located about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a port city with over 181,000 inhabitants, surrounded by the volcano and situated opposite an important Russian submarine base.
Earlier, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 29 km below the surface and its epicenter was approximately 102 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.
