- Thanks to his dynamism, perceptiveness, and willingness to think outside the box and take action, in recent years, veteran Ho Van Hoc (born in 1972) from Dong Hoa Minh Khai village, Chi Lang commune, has boldly developed fruit tree cultivation and effectively implemented a business model for purchasing and selling agricultural products.
In early April 2026, we had the opportunity to visit the family of veteran Ho Van Hoc while he was busy tending to his family's custard apple orchard. Sharing his story with us, Mr. Hoc said: "I was born and raised in a farming family. In 1991, I joined the military service, stationed at the 337th Division, 2nd Regiment (formerly Chi Lang commune). In 1993, I was discharged from the army, then got married and developed the local economy. At that time, income mainly depended on a few acres of rice fields and corn plantations, so my family faced many difficulties."

After years of deliberation and research into economic models, and recognizing that his family owned land near the national highway, convenient for trade, Mr. Hoc chose to develop a business model of purchasing seasonal agricultural products from local farmers. Accordingly, since 1996, his family has been purchasing and guaranteeing the sale of custard apples from many households in the commune and some neighboring communes to wholesalers in the central provinces. In 2005, noticing that people in some communes were developing lychee cultivation, but that prices had been unstable for many years, Mr. Hoc began purchasing fresh lychees, drying them, and exporting them to companies that export to China. In 2025, recognizing the market demand for cassava starch, he invested in machinery and began purchasing fresh cassava tubers from farmers to produce starch.
Mr. Hoc shared: "My family buys agricultural products seasonally, mainly custard apples, lychees, and cassava. Every year, around May, I buy lychees; from June to October, I buy custard apples; and from January to February, I buy cassava from the locals. My family buys these agricultural products at market prices. On average, each year, my family buys over 300 tons of custard apples, 500 tons of lychees, and about 500 tons of fresh cassava."
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thoi, from Dong Hoa Minh Khai village, Chi Lang commune, said: "My family has about 300 custard apple trees that yield a stable harvest every year. Every year, after the harvest, Mr. Hoc buys our custard apples at a stable market price. Thanks to this, my family can confidently invest in, care for, and expand our orchard."
In addition to purchasing and ensuring a stable market for farmers, since 2024, Mr. Hoc has also provided seeds and partnered with several households in the communes of Van Linh, Loc Binh, Trang Dinh, etc., to cultivate high-yield cassava. At harvest time, he buys the cassava from the farmers at the agreed-upon price (from 2,000 to 2,500 VND/kg).
Besides purchasing agricultural products from local farmers, his family also focuses on developing custard apple cultivation. Currently, his family has over 800 custard apple trees, of which more than 100 are already producing fruit. From developing this business model of trading various agricultural products and growing fruit trees, his family earns over 300 million VND per year after deducting expenses and creates seasonal jobs for 2 to 4 local laborers.
To strengthen cooperation and improve production and business efficiency, in 2021, Mr. Hoc spearheaded the establishment of the Quang Huy Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative with 7 members, with himself as director. The cooperative primarily operates in the fields of agricultural and forestry production and seasonal agricultural product trading.
Sharing his plans for the future, Mr. Hoc said: "Besides continuing to develop the agricultural business, my family has leased 2 hectares of land with the intention of developing a cattle breeding farm."
Mr. Trinh Van Dinh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Chi Lang commune, commented: Veteran Ho Van Hoc is always exemplary and a leader in participating in the association's activities and emulation movements. He is also one of the exemplary members in economic development coupled with social responsibility. He always helps and shares his economic development experience for other veterans to learn from and emulate. Through this, he has contributed to spreading the movement of "Veterans helping each other reduce poverty and excel in economic activities" throughout the association.
In recognition of his efforts, in February 2026, Mr. Hoc was honored with a commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for his effective economic development model, contributing to poverty reduction and job creation for local workers.
