According to China Central Television (CCTV), at the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from June 8 to 9.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also confirmed the visit, but did not provide further details.
The visit comes as China seeks to strengthen ties with North Korea.
Despite close relations between Beijing and Pyongyang, visits to North Korea by Chinese leaders are relatively rare, according to AFP.
The last time Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang was in 2019.
This was the first visit by a Chinese leader to North Korea since the 2005 visit by then-Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Last September, Xi Jinping hosted Kim Jong Un in Beijing, inviting Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend a military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
China and North Korea have recently strengthened bilateral relations, for example by restoring train and air routes between the two countries' capitals.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited North Korea in April and met with leader Kim Jong Un. He emphasized the close relationship between the two countries and said that both sides need to strengthen coordination on major regional and global issues.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit North Korea less than a month after he hosted US President Donald Trump and then Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing in mid-May.
In March, Kim Jong Un declared North Korea's nuclear status "irreversible," and that expanding its "self-defense nuclear deterrence" was essential for national security, regional stability, and economic development.
