In a Facebook post on Truth Social on November 30, President-elect Donald Trump warned the BRICS countries that they must commit to not creating a new currency and not supporting any alternative currency to the USD. "Or they will face 100% tariffs and should prepare to say goodbye to selling to the great American economy ," Trump wrote.

The president-elect declared that there is no chance of BRICS replacing the USD in international trade, and warned that any country attempting to do so should "say goodbye" to the US.
BRICS is an acronym for five emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has expanded and added five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Amidst increasingly intense competition with the US, Russia and China have repeatedly mentioned replacing the US dollar in international and bilateral transactions.
China, Mexico, and Canada issued warnings after Trump threatened to raise tariffs on his first day in office.
According to a report this year by the Council on Foreign Relations (a policy research organization in New York, USA), cited by Axios , creating a unified currency to replace the USD is a long-term ambition of the BRICS countries, but internal divisions have hampered this idea.
The threat against BRICS is the latest shot in Trump's campaign to use tariffs to achieve his policy goals. Previously, he said he would impose a 10% import tariff on all goods entering the US from all countries, and a 60% tariff on China. More recently, he warned of a 25% tariff on neighboring Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% on China, to deter illegal immigration and the trafficking of fentanyl into the US.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Mr. Trump spoke by phone, but Mexican officials warned they would retaliate proportionally against any US tariffs. Canada made a similar statement, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently traveled to Florida to meet with Mr. Trump on the issue.
In another post on November 30, Trump said he had a very productive meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau, in which many important topics were discussed and "require the two countries to work together to resolve," such as fentanyl, illegal immigration, trade deficit, energy, and the Arctic.
