In the 65th minute of a friendly match in Odense, Eriksen unexpectedly put his hand to his chest while the ball was rolling in the middle of the pitch. Television footage showed the 34-year-old midfielder seemingly sensing something unusual in his body before losing his balance and falling to the ground.
Eriksen didn't collide with any other player. He deliberately clutched his chest, slowed his pace for a few steps, and then collapsed. This action immediately panicked his teammates because it was reminiscent of the tragedy at EURO 2020, when Eriksen's heart stopped beating for about 5 minutes.
Medical personnel immediately rushed onto the pitch. Players from both teams formed a circle to protect Eriksen's privacy while doctors administered emergency treatment. After about 13 minutes, the former Manchester United star regained consciousness and was able to stand up on his own before being taken to the hospital for further examination.
Cardiologist Sadi Raza believes Eriksen's chest-clutching reaction stemmed from the electrical shock delivered by the implanted defibrillator (ICD). According to the expert, the sensation when the device is activated is often similar to a hard object striking the chest, causing the patient to reflexively bring their hands to the heart area immediately.
"It's possible that the device detected a dangerous heart rhythm and automatically delivered an electric shock to bring the heart back to normal. That could be the reason Eriksen clutched his chest and fell to the ground," Raza speculated.
The exact cause of the incident has not yet been released. Doctors will analyze data from the ICD to determine whether the device reacted to a genuine arrhythmia or simply an abnormal signal. However, the positive news is that Eriksen quickly regained consciousness and was confirmed to be in stable condition.
