After 15 years of implementing Directive No. 24 dated July 4, 7 of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, term X "on the development of Vietnamese traditional medicine and the Vietnam Oriental Medicine Association in the new situation", Oriental medicine activities in the province have had many remarkable results. However, the province's Oriental medicine still has many potentials that have not been properly promoted...
Promoting the combination of Eastern and Western medicine helps bring more efficiency in the examination and treatment of diseases for patients.
It is advisable to promote the coordination of Eastern and Western medicine in medical examination and treatment
Over the years, the system of medical examination and treatment by Oriental medicine has been gradually improved throughout the province. Up to now, Oriental medicine activities have been implemented at the Provincial General Hospital, the Provincial Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology; 6/8 health centers, 3 district general hospitals and 75/75 commune health stations, wards and townships. In the period 2008-2022, there were more than 1,25 million visits of patients for medical examination and treatment according to traditional medicine, collecting over 3,37 million prescriptions. Treated with acupuncture, acupressure, exercise, etc. for more than 2,52 million patients inside and outside the province. The number of patients being treated and the number of prescription drugs has now doubled compared to 2008.
In Phung Hiep district, every day, about 100 patients come to examine and treat diseases by combining Eastern and Western medicine methods at the Department of Traditional Medicine, the District Health Center and the commune and township health stations. In addition to using modern machinery and equipment with western medicines, patients can also use oriental medicine and apply a number of methods such as acupuncture, acupressure, thread implant, ... according to the treatment regimen of each patient to improve the efficiency of medical examination and treatment. Thanks to that, in recent years, the district health center has not only treated local people but also received many patients from other provinces such as Kien Giang, Vinh Long, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, etc.
Having had a history of stroke more than half a year ago, Mr. Nguyen Van Man, from Tan Phu A2 hamlet, Bung Tau town, Phung Hiep district, has been cured by Western medicine. However, recently, due to a lot of field work and heavy work, Mr. Man showed signs of numbness and pain again. Therefore, he decided to be hospitalized at the Department of Traditional Medicine, Phung Hiep District Health Center for treatment. “For the past two days, I have had acupuncture combined with medications, but I feel much better. I think this method is good, so I will continue to follow it to be completely healthy, "Mr. Man shared.
Oriental medicine has been bringing many benefits in medical examination and treatment for people. However, in recent years, this activity has not really been widely applied in the province. Out of a total of 2.590 beds available at medical examination and treatment facilities in the province, only 189 beds are reserved for examination and treatment with traditional medicine. According to Decision No. 362 dated March 11, 3 of the Prime Minister approving the investment project to build and upgrade the system of traditional medicine hospitals nationwide in the period 2014-2014, Hau Giang is on the list of traditional medicine hospitals prioritized for investment in the 2025-2016 period.
However, for many reasons, this project has not been implemented so far. There is no leading specialized facility, making it difficult to direct the line and transfer techniques in medical examination and treatment with Oriental medicine. Scientific research on traditional medicine is still limited. The good and effective remedies in Oriental medicine have not been inherited and applied much in practice, etc. Therefore, Eastern medicine has not shown all its value to the care and protection of people's health. Promoting the potential of Eastern medicine, promoting the coordination of Eastern and Western medicine in medical examination and treatment are essential things in the coming period.
Can oriental medicine participate in socio-economic development?
Oriental medicine is an important part of the medical profession. Over the past time, Oriental medicine has contributed to the socio-economic development of the province, but mainly focused on medical examination and treatment. In fact, Oriental medicine also has potential in other fields. According to Mr. Dau Xuan Canh, President of the Vietnam Association of Oriental Medicine: “Traditional medicine is expanding day by day. In addition to medical examination and treatment, Oriental medicine is also strongly developing the preparation and production of drugs to bring aesthetics and health to people. Oriental medicine is now also associated with the development of medicine.”
Hau Giang is considered a locality with many strengths in medicinal herbs. According to the research, the genetic resources of medicinal plants in the province are quite rich with 14 species for essential oils (Muu, Melaleuca, ...) and many precious medicinal species with scientific value and application value such as canna, radial interspersed, bitter green vegetables, chlorophyll, and safflower, etc. Lung Ngoc Hoang Nature Reserve is currently a place to concentrate and preserve many kinds of medicinal plants of the province.
75/75 health stations in the province all have a model herbal garden and guide people to grow it locally. Encourage people to use herbal medicine according to the motto "Teacher on the spot, medicine in the garden, treatment at home", increasing self-sufficient medicine in the prevention and treatment of diseases. In Chau Thanh A district, Phung Hiep district, Vi Thanh city, a number of households have grown medicinal plants with an area of 5.000-6.000m2 for trading or providing charity medical examination and treatment facilities with Oriental medicine. In fact, medicinal plants are very potential to grow, helping to develop agriculture in association with tourism development. However, this potential has not been fully exploited.
Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said: In the spirit of the approved provincial planning, we review the annual implementation plan on the development orientation of agriculture and tourism. We will interweave and integrate planning, bringing the task of developing traditional medicine, a chain of medicinal herbs in combination with agriculture and tourism. Building a model of growing medicinal plants that are both suitable for health, for tourists and for the production of nutritious food. These are the things that we are very passionate about.
Hau Giang should pay attention to developing pharmaceuticals and drugs
Mr. Dau Xuan Canh, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Oriental Medicine, said: “Hau Giang is an agricultural province, so we should pay attention to traditional medicine by developing medicinal herbs and medicines. Develop the entire planning of indigenous medicinal herbs of the province and the strengths of medicinal herbs that need attention. If Hau Giang can build a factory, a center with a large capacity of nutritious food to serve people in the province and throughout the country, it will bring added value and income for the people. Since then, bringing Eastern medicine to participate more deeply in the socio-economic development of the province.
