Quietly and without haste, Phu Quy is writing a different story: developing tourism without sacrificing the environment and its unique identity. From a "rough gem" in the middle of the ocean, the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone is gradually becoming a green destination, where experiences are built on authenticity, sustainability, and responsibility.

The sea at Phu Quy is clear and blue.
Choose green instead of hot growth.
In the early days of the dry season, the sea around Phu Quy Island is so clear and blue that you can see the coral reefs beneath the surface. Along the coastal road, the wind carries the salty scent of the sea and a slow pace of life, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of many other popular tourist destinations. This atmosphere makes many visitors feel as if they have stepped into a secluded world , where time seems to slow down.
A large number of tourists visit Phu Quy Island this March.
Sitting by the small beach at Ganh Hang, Ms. Minh Anh, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “What I like most about Phu Quy is not just the beautiful scenery, but the very authentic feeling. The locals are friendly, there’s no haggling, and it’s not chaotic. I feel like this place still retains the ‘soul’ of the islands.”
She added that what impressed her most wasn't a specific check-in spot, but the feeling of living at a slower pace amidst pristine nature, where every experience felt natural and intimate.
Stories like Minh Anh's are not uncommon. Many people visit Phu Quy and return, not only for the scenery but also for the people, which local leaders call "soft resources."
Mr. Le Hong Loi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quy Special Economic Zone
"
We believe that development must go hand in hand with environmental protection. We will absolutely not sacrifice the environment for tourism growth at any cost.
According to him, in its strategic plan for the 2025-2030 term, Phu Quy Island has chosen a more challenging but sustainable path: green tourism, based on its unique identity and experiences. "The people of Phu Quy are honest, hospitable, and kind-hearted; these are the core values that will retain tourists for the long term," Mr. Loi emphasized.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Phu Quy Island is gradually telling its story through its culture and way of life. Traditional festivals are being revived, ancient temples are being preserved, and even meals rich in the flavors of the sea create a complete experience.
Developing Phu Quy into a green, smart, and responsible destination.
From a broader perspective, the story of Phu Quy Island is inseparable from the province's tourism development strategy.
According to Mr. Dinh Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, in recent years, thanks to the efforts of the local government and people, along with support from the central and provincial governments, Phu Quy tourism has seen significant development, with a rapid increase in the number of visitors, longer stays, and a higher return rate.
Tourists enjoy experiencing many activities in Phu Quy.
According to the Vice Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, in the context of increasing demand for beach and island resort tourism, experiential tourism, and eco-tourism, Phu Quy is expected to become a high-quality highlight of the province and the region, based on its advantages of islands and beaches associated with heritage, culture, and seafood cuisine.
The province aims to develop this area into a green, high-quality, and sustainable tourist destination, focusing on visitor experience and community benefits. Notably, Phu Quy is not developing in isolation but as part of a comprehensive network linking islands and highlands.
Inter-regional tourism routes have been established, connecting Phu Quy island with Mui Ne resort and the Lam Dong plateau, creating a chain of products ranging from marine ecology, culture, cuisine to unique climate. The complementarity between the pristine islands and the cool plateau is expected to extend the length of stay and increase the spending value of tourists.
"
In the long term, Lam Dong province aims to develop Phu Quy into a typical island and coastal tourism destination, developing in a green, smart, and responsible direction, contributing to ensuring harmony between economic development and conservation.

Festivals such as boat races also attract many tourists to Phu Quy Island.
According to provincial leaders, developing tourism in Phu Quy is not only about expanding the island's maritime space, but also a strategic step to restructure the tourism ecosystem towards diversity, sustainability, and enhanced regional linkages. Simultaneously, the province particularly expects the collaborative role of businesses in developing unique tourism products such as marine ecotourism, water sports, community tourism, and the exploration of local culture.
Businesses are encouraged to participate in standardizing service quality, applying digital technology, developing smart tourism, reducing emissions, and using environmentally friendly materials, contributing to building Phu Quy's image as a green, attractive, and responsible destination.
Beyond just products, businesses are expected to create a linked service chain between coastal and highland areas, from accommodation, transportation, and cuisine to experiences, in order to form a closed tourism ecosystem, increasing value and spreading benefits to the local community.
In its long-term strategy, Lam Dong province will implement a comprehensive set of preferential mechanisms and policies for island communes; prioritize attracting green and sustainable tourism projects; improve the quality of infrastructure, services, and human resources; and promote and build the Phu Quy brand.
These policies aim to ensure a harmonious balance between tourism development, marine and island environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods for local people, with the goal of building Phu Quy into a green, smart, and responsible destination within the tourism ecosystem of Lam Dong province.
The story of environmental protection in Phu Quy Island is of great interest to tourists, who actively participate alongside the local people.
Returning to the story of Phu Quy Island, these strategic directions are not just on paper or in long-term visions, but are gradually becoming a reality in the small changes of tourism life there.
This means that local people are adapting to a new, more civilized, greener, and more responsible way of doing tourism. Small businesses, homestays, and food services are gradually reducing the use of single-use plastics, focusing on preserving the landscape and enhancing the visitor experience.
Mr. Tam, a homestay owner on the island, shared: "Tourists are now very concerned about the environment. Therefore, we also change accordingly, limiting plastic use and keeping the space cleaner. For long-term tourism development, we must preserve the island."
In that picture, Phu Quy is no longer just a tourist destination, but a promise of a different way of doing tourism: slower, greener, and more sustainable.
