According to ESPN, Lionel Messi has been fined by Paris Saint-Germain for violating team discipline. The Argentinian player will not train, play, or receive his salary for a period of two weeks.
The incident stemmed from Lionel Messi's trip to Saudi Arabia. After the match against Lorient, the Argentine superstar left the team to undertake a scheduled trip to fulfill contractual obligations with a partner in Saudi Arabia.
However, coach Christoph Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos only agreed to let Messi do so if PSG won. In fact, the Parc des Princes team lost to Lorient, but Messi did not change his schedule.
Messi received a penalty for violating club regulations.
Messi was absent from Monday's training session without permission, causing tension in the PSG dressing room. Many players expressed their displeasure with Messi's behavior. As a result, the Parc des Princes club had to impose a penalty to warn the Argentine superstar against his actions.
The penalty comes at a time when Messi and PSG are at an impasse in contract extension negotiations. Many sources in France indicate that the Parc des Princes club does not want to keep the Argentine superstar.
Messi has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal and Inter Miami of the American Major League Soccer.
A section of PSG fans has been fiercely criticizing Messi. They argue that Messi lacks the determination and motivation to lead PSG to success. With a salary of 40 million euros a season, Messi was expected to lead PSG to the top of Europe. However, the team failed in both seasons Messi played for them.
