Mbappe won his lawsuit against PSG and received a huge sum of money. |
Following a French court ruling compelling PSG to pay outstanding salaries and bonuses, the Parisian club decided not to appeal. In a statement, PSG emphasized that they did not want to prolong the "already protracted" proceedings further, and affirmed that the club is now fully focused on its sporting project and collective success.
The dispute revolves around PSG's refusal to pay certain financial commitments after Mbappe decided to leave the club as a free agent in the summer of 2024. The court ruling stated that the total amount PSG must pay is 60.9 million euros.
Notably, €36.6 million is the remaining portion of the massive signing bonus Mbappe received when he previously extended his contract. In addition, PSG must pay €17.25 million in unpaid wages for April, May, and June 2024, along with vacation pay and related bonuses.
The relationship between Mbappe and President Nasser Al-Khelaifi fractured significantly from the 2023/24 season, when the striker announced he would not activate his contract extension clause. He was even left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of Asia, although he later returned and helped PSG win the domestic league title once again. However, the simmering tension never disappeared.
Mbappe's legal representatives consider the ruling a complete vindication, asserting that the club has no right to withhold funds stipulated in the contract. For their part, PSG's lawyers stated that the club has fully fulfilled its obligations under the ruling and rejected accusations of delaying payments.
The €61 million expenditure was a significant financial blow, but PSG accepted it to put an end to the controversy surrounding their relationship with the club's greatest ever striker.
