The full name of Brunei is Negara Brunei Darussalam, which:
“Negara” means “country” (Malay).
“Darussalam” means “place of peace” (Arabic).
According to historical records, Brunei was founded by Awang Alak Betatar, later Sultan Muhammad Shah, who reigned around 1400. He sailed from Garang, Temburong District, to the mouth of the Brunei River and when he landed, he shouted “Baru nah!”, which roughly means “There!”. This is the origin of the name Brunei.
Brunei was once renamed “Barunai”, possibly influenced by the Sanskrit word “Varun”, meaning “sailors” in the 14th century.
