Numerous leaks suggest that Apple plans to launch the "thinnest iPhone 17 Air ever" alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max in September.
The question is which components Apple will have to cut back on to achieve this capability. According to leaked information and images, it seems the battery will be the component that has to be "sacrificed" to achieve this remarkable design.

Specifically, according to images revealed by rumor expert Majin Bu, the battery in the iPhone 17 Air will only have a capacity of 2800 mAh, a significant reduction compared to the 3500 mAh capacity of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to have an increased battery capacity, reaching around 5000 mAh.
This information was also confirmed by the account yeux1122 on the South Korean Naver blog. This leaker later released a leaked photo of the iPhone 17 Air battery showing a thickness of only about 2.49 mm, much thinner than the iPhone 17 Pro battery.
However you look at it, this is still a significant drop. In fact, the last iPhone with a battery capacity under 3,000 mAh, the iPhone 13 mini (2,438 mAh battery), was released four years ago.
The market might be wary of an iPhone with a small battery capacity, especially considering the importance of battery life for most users.
One reason for the iPhone 17 Air's low battery life stems from its ultra-thin design (5.5 mm at its thinnest point). If the rumors are accurate, this would be the thinnest iPhone ever. For comparison, the iPhone 16 is 7.8 mm thick.
To cater to those who want a thin iPhone but with long battery life, rumors suggest Apple plans to release a Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 17 Air, but it will be sold separately instead of included as a free gift.
