Information about the candidate submitting his application to be the head coach of the Vietnam team was discussed a lot this morning (March 30). Mr. Kim Sang-sik - Korean - is the name mentioned. However, this information has not been verified.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik was born in 1976 and is a former Korean national team player. When he was playing, he was a center back, defensive midfielder and spent most of his career playing for the two top clubs in Korea, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik's achievement table when he was a player is full of collective titles of Korean football. He won the K League 1 championship with both teams Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
In the Korean team shirt, Mr. Kim Sang-sik attended the 2006 World Cup. However, this former defender has never been a key factor in the Korean national team squad. In his only World Cup appearance, Mr. Kim Sang-sik only played about 20 minutes when he was put on the bench.
Retiring in 2013, Mr. Kim Sang-sik switched to coaching as an assistant at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Club. After 8 years, the Korean team appointed this former player to the position of head coach. This is the first and only time he has received this task in his coaching career.
According to Transfermarkt data, coach Kim Sang-sik led Jeonbuk Hyundai 108 matches, winning an average of 1,94 points per match.
He started his coaching career impressively with the K League 1 championship in 2021 and the Korean FA Cup in 2022 (finishing second in K League 1 the same year). However, in the 2023 season, Jeonbuk clearly declined.
After the first 10 rounds, coach Kim Sang-sik's team lost 6 matches and was far behind the top team. The coach born in 1976 wrote a handwritten letter to the club and fans apologizing and resigning. He has not led any team up to this point.
