In the early hours of December 11th, the Brazilian striker opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a dangerous angled shot, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma of Manchester City. This goal ended Real Madrid's 32-match goalless streak across all competitions.
Since his last goal on March 4th against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Rodrygo has gone eight months without scoring at club level.
Furthermore, Rodrygo has increased his goal tally against Man City to 5 goals in 9 encounters, an impressive statistic compared to any of his Real Madrid teammates.
The arrival of coach Xabi Alonso at the start of the season was expected to give the Brazilian striker a morale boost. However, Rodrygo still struggled to compete for a starting place at Bernabeu. His goal against Man City was hoped to help him relieve the pressure he had been under for some time.
However, Rodrygo's efforts were not enough to secure a victory for Real Madrid against Man City. Nico O'Reilly and Erling Haaland scored two goals, earning the visitors three valuable points. This also marked Pep Guardiola and his team's first win against Real Madrid in two years.
This result sees coach Xabi Alonso's team drop to 7th place. Monaco and Benfica, managed by Jose Mourinho, will be Real's final two challenges in this season's Champions League.
