Bustling... stirring the furrows

The art of performing the "khua luong" dance is preserved and promoted by the Thai ethnic people in Quan Son district.

"Khua luong" is a folk performance art of the Thai ethnic group in general and Quan Son district in particular. To perform "Khua luong," a large tree is selected, a wide hole is drilled to create sound, and long wooden sticks, about 1.5 meters long, are used to strike the tree trunk. Typically, 6 to 8 women participate in "Khua luong," with one acting as the leader, one tapping the rhythm, and the remaining pairs using wooden sticks to strike the sides of the tree in time with the beat.

According to elderly people in Quan Son district, the art of pounding rice originates from the labor and production activities of the local people. For Thai ethnic women, pounding rice is a familiar daily task to prepare family meals. While pounding rice, women often add a few more pounding strokes with the pestle against the sides of the rice field or tap the pestles together, creating captivating sounds that dispel the difficulties of life. Over time, pounding rice has become an indispensable art form in the lives of the Thai ethnic people.

Ms. Ha Thi Thung, a passionate performer of the "Khua Luong" folk singing tradition in Phe village, Tam Thanh commune, said: "From a young age, watching the women perform 'Khua Luong' made me very passionate and determined to learn. With the guidance of my grandmother and mother, by the age of 10, I was already proficient in performing 'Khua Luong'. For many years, I have taken advantage of my free time during the agricultural off-season to train many women in the village. Through these training sessions, many women have learned how to perform and actively participate in cultural and artistic activities, passing on the passion for 'Khua Luong' folk singing to the younger generation."

Mr. Ha Van Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Thanh commune, said: Tam Thanh is a border commune, with the Thai ethnic minority accounting for over 95% of the population. Although the people face many difficulties in their lives, they are always conscious of preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, including the art of "Khua Luong" performance. Thanks to this, the "Khua Luong" performance always appears during festivals and holidays, creating a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere, strengthening community bonds, and educating the younger generation to cherish the "treasure" left by their ancestors.

"To preserve and promote the art of 'Khua Luong' performance, Quan Son district has directed communes and towns to strengthen the dissemination of information about the value of this performance art form to the spiritual life of the people. Those knowledgeable about 'Khua Luong' performance art are encouraged to teach it to the younger generation. Therefore, the art of 'Khua Luong' performance is being promoted in the lives of the Thai ethnic minority. In the future, the district will continue to encourage localities to organize cultural and artistic exchange activities; pay attention to incorporating 'Khua Luong' performance art into cultural and artistic programs and extracurricular activities in schools; and mobilize resources to preserve and promote the art of 'Khua Luong' performance art," shared Mr. Le Van Tho, Head of the Culture, Science and Information Department of Quan Son district.
