The reason Ronaldo wasn't called up to the Portuguese national team was due to injury. The superstar sustained the injury in Al Nassr's 3-1 victory over Al Fayha in Round 24 of the Saudi Pro League on February 28th.
After sustaining the injury, Ronaldo immediately flew to Spain for treatment, hoping to recover quickly and play for the Portuguese national team in the March training camp.
However, Ronaldo did not recover from his injury as expected. Therefore, coach Roberto Martinez removed Ronaldo from the Portuguese national team squad.
Immediately, coach Martinez also spoke up to reassure fans, confirming that Ronaldo will participate in the 2026 World Cup.
"It's just a minor muscle injury, Ronaldo could be back in one or two weeks," said coach Martinez. Martinez's statement is seen as consistent with what Al Nassr's doctors had previously confirmed.
Therefore, this injury will certainly not affect Ronaldo's ability to participate in the 2026 World Cup. CR7 has currently scored 965 goals (including 143 for the Portuguese national team) and is aiming for the historic milestone of 1,000 goals.
During the FIFA Days in March, the Portuguese national team will play two friendly matches against Mexico on March 28th and the United States on March 31st. These are the final two "warm-up" matches for Portugal before the 2026 World Cup, where Ronaldo and his teammates are in Group K with Uzbekistan, Colombia, and a team that qualifies from the play-off round.
