Lynch described his book as “an attempt at radical empathy,” using fiction to transcend the normalized complacency prevalent in Western society saturated with global news. It is written in the present tense, in stifling chunks of prose, with long sentences that intensify the sense of oppression. It also lacks quotation marks or paragraph breaks, as if there were no pauses or breaks in the aforementioned dark nightmare.

Critics have also noted the influence of the late writer Cormac McCarthy on this work. It is a novel written to awaken readers to truths that we are almost incapable of acknowledging. We feel uneasy, immersed, and haunted by a lingering, suffocating fear. The author is unwavering, depicting violence realistically and offering no comforting words.”

Regarding the art of writing, this author stated: “The sentences have been stretched to their limit, and Lynch has created astonishing linguistic feats. He has the heart of a poet, using recurring motifs to create a powerful reading experience. This is a triumph of emotionally charged, courageous, and uncompromising storytelling, through which the book captures the social and political anxieties of our time.”

Before this victory was announced, the odds for Prophet Song were also at their highest. Critics stated: “A decade ago, this book might have seemed like a far-fetched dark tale, but with recent global conflicts, such stories have become all too familiar in the context of contemporary news. Therefore, Lynch’s Prophet Song is relatively timely and a worthy winner.”

Sharing his thoughts on the book, Lynch said: “I’m trying to look at the current chaos. The instability in Western democracies, the Syrian problem – the collapse of a nation, the scale of the refugee crisis and Western indifference… Prophet Song is partly an attempt to achieve radical empathy. To understand it better, we first have to experience it ourselves. So I sought to delve into the dark side by giving it a high degree of realism.”
