Hair salon at the hospital

QTO - For more than four months now, every Thursday, the atmosphere in the grounds of Dong Hoi Regional General Hospital has become more vibrant than usual. A small corner has been repurposed as a free hair salon, where young volunteers diligently cut hair for patients and their families, bringing comfort and relief amidst the tiring days of treatment.

A precious "spiritual medicine".

Ms. Trinh Thi Hien (76 years old), from Dong Son ward, was admitted to the hospital for acupuncture and rehabilitation treatment following the after-effects of a stroke. Knowing that she had difficulty walking, the social work team of Dong Hoi Regional General Hospital sent volunteers to cut her hair right at her bedside. “Getting a nice haircut for free made me happy because the hospital cares so much and provides such thorough service,” Ms. Hien said.

Running his hand through his neatly styled new hair, patient Tran Van Dang (77 years old), from Truong Ninh commune, smiled and shared: "I've been busy with treatment these past few days and haven't had the chance to go out for a haircut. Now that I have a haircut, I feel much more relaxed."

Being cared for is like receiving a dose of emotional support, helping patients recover more quickly during treatment.

Mr. Hoang Phi Lam from Dong Hoi ward happened to learn about the free haircut program while on duty caring for a family member at the hospital. He was very happy that the volunteers cut his hair carefully and thoughtfully. Mr. Lam said: “Going to a barbershop costs 50-70 thousand dong, and sometimes it's not as thorough as this. I am truly touched and feel warm-hearted because of the thoughtfulness and enthusiasm of the volunteers. Thank you to the hospital for organizing this meaningful program.”

The free haircut program for patients and their families, organized by Dong Hoi Regional General Hospital in collaboration with POK Barber 73 Quang Binh salon, started in July 2025. Over four months of implementation, the program has provided haircuts to more than 700 people.

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hung, Deputy Head of the Planning and Synthesis Department and Head of the Social Work Team at Dong Hoi Regional General Hospital, said: "We noticed that elderly patients are frail and have difficulty moving around, and some patients have difficult economic conditions and cannot afford to go out for haircuts. Based on this need, the hospital came up with the idea to implement this program with the hope of helping to alleviate some of the patients' expenses and to instill positive energy in them. When patients feel happy, comfortable, and optimistic, their treatment becomes much easier."

Young workers with a volunteer spirit.

Accompanying the hospital was the enthusiastic and proactive group of volunteers from POK Barber 73 Quang Binh salon. Mr. Dam Xuan Thang, the salon owner, said: "Our group had previously organized free haircuts near Bac Ly Primary School. When we received the request from Dong Hoi Regional General Hospital, we immediately accepted because we saw it as a very meaningful activity."

By participating in this program, we are happy to be able to contribute in a small way to helping patients and also to have the opportunity to meet more people. Most of the patients are elderly, have difficulty walking, and are in difficult circumstances. Every time we see patients happy and express their gratitude after getting a haircut, we feel happy too. That is the motivation for us to continue this activity for the long term.

The volunteers meticulously and sincerely provided beauty treatments for the patients.
The volunteers meticulously "beautified" the patients with genuine care and sincerity.

“I am very happy that these young people are so thoughtful and compassionate. When patients who have been ill for a long time come to the hospital and receive such care, we feel comforted and encouraged, it's like a painkiller,” shared Mr. Dang Xuan Quang (80 years old) from Dong Son ward.

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hung stated: "The free haircut program is one of the activities of the Social Work Team aimed at helping patients feel more comfortable. This activity is always given attention and support by the Board of Directors, departments, and wards of the hospital, creating favorable conditions and with the participation of volunteers."

In addition, we also organize free meals for patients in difficult circumstances; and provide support and guidance to patients during their visits and treatments. All of this is aimed at creating the best and most convenient conditions for patients and their families to feel at ease when coming to the hospital.
