On the afternoon of November 22nd, upon learning that the Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company had closed the Doc Mieu spillway and ceased flood discharge operations at the Ke Go reservoir (Cam Due commune), dozens of local residents brought nets and boats to the area below the spillway to fish.
Over the years, authorities have released various fish species to regenerate aquatic resources in Ke Go Lake. When Ke Go Lake releases floodwaters, the fish follow the current downstream through the spillway, converging in a large, deep pond, about 8-10 meters deep, located just below the Doc Mieu spillway.
Among the fish species caught by locals in the Dốc Miếu spillway, carp are the most numerous. The carp caught in the nets mostly weigh between 2 and 4 kg.
However, some people still manage to catch carp weighing 10kg or more.
According to locals, with diligent net casting and good luck, each person can catch tens of yens of fish, or even hundreds of kilograms of carp, at the foot of the Doc Mieu spillway.
After catching the fish, locals sell them to traders and restaurants. Others take them to the market to sell. The income from catching carp when the Ke Go reservoir overflows can reach millions of dong.
Not only locals, but also some people from neighboring communes, upon hearing that the Ke Go reservoir had overflowed at Doc Mieu, came to fish.
Notably, among the dozens of people fishing for carp at the foot of the Doc Mieu spillway, only a few wore life jackets, while the majority did not carry any protective equipment. This also poses many potential safety risks.
On the rocky shore, quite a few locals gathered to watch the fishing as the Ke Go reservoir overflowed to release floodwaters. Video : Locals fishing under the Dốc Miếu spillway after the Kẻ Gỗ reservoir stopped releasing floodwaters.
